East Picton Road (re-opened)

Access on the East Picton Road has been opened semi permanently to allow rafting groups easier access to the Picton River and safer turning areas for larger buses.

What I want to know is have they told anyone the bridge at the other end is falling to pieces.... or have they rebuilt it? DOUBTFULLY!! People will have to turn around and go all the way back up west Picton if they take the East road to access Farmhouse or Mt Picton etc etc...

Surely if they have opened it for rafters there would be a sign advising that the bridge is out... I may have to go for a drive down there sometime soon and check it out.....

We really need someone from forestry on this site....

Received reply....I have pasted the full text as I'm not familiar with the roads down that way...so I hope it makes sense to those that do....here goes.

There are now two separate roads, the East Picton Road, and the West Picton Road. These roads were once known as The West Picton Road, The Picton Road, and The East Picton Road.

The Picton Road went along the Eastern side of the Picton to the IXL Bridge crossed over to the Western side and on to Farmhouse Creek (and a bit beyond at one stage).

Then we built the East Picton Road, from near the IXL Bridge to nearly opposite Farm house Creek.

Then finally we built the West Picton Road from The Riveaux Road on the western side of the Picton to near the IXL Bridge.

You could travel either side and cross over at the IXL Bridge with no problems, until the bridge was damaged by debris during various floods.
Now the bridge is closed permanently, so if you want to go to Farmhouse Creek you have to go on the West Picton Road, but the rafting access was all designed for the Eastern side of the Picton, making it very difficult (read dangerous) to access from the Western Side.

There are no plans to fix, repair, or replace the bridge.

It also pays to call in or check with the district office on the way to see if the road is open, and whether or not a key is needed.
