I know there's a company that does 5 day guided walks through the Tarkine starting with a swim across the Rapid River. I assume this isn't through private property so can this be done privately, or is this a no-no?

If you can't do this one, anyone know of a circuit walk of around 5 days through the Tarkine?

The company don't mind you using the track as far as I know, just as long as you aren't using their campsites (which are quite hardened e.g tarps set up etc.) when they turn upto them. I did a walk into Tarkine falls and then onto the Tarkine Lookout and back out via Hilders Bridge in three days. Let me know if you need any more info on the walk etc.

By the way, the route being used by Tarkine Trails last year when I did it only crossed the Arthur and Lyons Rivers, not the Rapid.

I think the Circuit starts at Farquhars Bridge (which is no more) on the Arthur River.

No It looks deep and the tour company crosses it in rafts.

Some friends and i are interested in 3-4 days walking in the Tarkine area. Bap i would be interested to hear your trip plan. This is a completely new area to me

Do you have any information about where I can obtain track notes for the walk from Farquar's Bridge to Hilder's Crossing through the forest. I understand that this is a 5 or 6 day walk

if you can get hold of one, Wild Magazine, Winter 2009, did a 5 page piece of a six day trip by Eli Greig. I think it starts at Farquhars Bridge across the Arthur and comes out some 10 km's NW of there. The walk spends two camping nights in the vicinity of Tarkine Lookout and Tarkine Falls. It's accompanied by a very rudimentary map that's fairly easy to correlate with the relevant Tasmaps. [The Tarkine: Australia's Threatened Labyrinth, pp.33-37]

Australian Geographic, a couple of years before, did a great spread with map, on the still notional Tarkine Track, from NE to SW, at the Pieman.

+1 to Mieng. If someone has some track notes, or knows of a blog or who has a decent map, could they please post it or PM me too. Can someone who has spent time in this area please let me know what is the best time to go - relatively fine weather would be nice, and safe river crossings. Just thinking in general terms because I know what the weather can be like in Tassie.

February or late summer more generally is usually the best : the weather is mostly set (emphasize on "mostly") and since it's the end of summer this should (emphasize on "should") be the time when the rivers are the easiest to cross. But the Tarkine is one of the wettest places in Tasmania, so it's still a gamble, you'd have to be incredibly lucky to have 5 consecutive days of fine weather.
