Claytons At Bathurst Harbour

Postby wander » Tue 16 Nov, 2010 8:28 am

Looking at the 1:25K for Melaleuca there is a bay in Bathurst Harbour called Claytons Corner and in the North East corner on the shore is a black square labelled "Claytons" and a black line so I am guessing a building and a jetty is being shown on the map. Is this correct? What is at Claytons?

Using the forum search the best I can find is a reference to a toilet at Claytons.

There used to be a few communities in Bathurst Harbour, lots of jetties and old buildings, im guessing it's probably one of those.
Nothing to see here.

There is a good Jetty and a house at Claytons Corner. The house is no longer occupied and is open for day use, but I'm pretty sure staying overnight is not allowed. There is also plenty of fresh water in the tanks normally. A foot track leads up the nearby hill which has great views.

Yes. I can't recall seeing the camping area but I know you can camp there.

Does anyone know whether there is an unofficial track from Clayton's Corner to somewhere along the Port Davey Track?
If anyone knows please PM me the details!

Thanks!

The name comes from Clyde and Win Clayton whose house it was. Win was Denny King's sister and her husband was a fisherman.

There is a pad that runs from behind the house up to Mt Beattie - from there it would be off track to the Port Davey Track - pretty obvious and probably the best way as you also get great views over the harbor.

There is a group -"Friends of Claytons" who have put new water tank in and generally maintain the property. You definitely are allowed to stay overnight in the house - there are Instructions inside on the wall for people using the house. You would have no trouble finding a spot to pitch your tent near the house If you prefer to tent and just use the house for your kitchen.

Clayton's Corner is a good spot. The track up Mt Beattie is excellent and a credit to the track builders art. The trail from there to the Port Davey Track (we actually went the other way) is very faint but the route is fairly obvious. It probably is better if folks spread out and take different routes on this section and do to allow a track to form.

There is no toilet at Clayton's despite the advice on the Parkies maps. There is a 60litre plastic rubbish bin with a torn bin liner full to the brim with brown water that some one thought was a toilet once. But they are very much mistaken.

We did find an excellent looking toilet a little South of Clayton's but it was locked.
