WoJ to OT via Never Never

Mon 03 Jan, 2011 3:17 pm

Hi all,

we are planning a trip to the Walls then going to the OT and Pine Valley. I've been reading Chapman's book and we'll be going via the Never Never. I have a couple of questions. First off, does anyone have the grid reference for one of the famous logs for crossing the Mersey River? I've done a search on this forum and so far I've had no luck tracking down co-ordinates. I know there should be a crossing before McCoy Falls, but anything more specific would be appreciated.

Also, the reports I've read indicate the Never Never can be hard going, with one suggesting you are better off staying well North of the Mersey R, before the crossing point, and then staying close after crossing. Does anyone that has done made this trip care to comment?

Any other insights, suggestions or generally helpful info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

I've been along that way twice - once down and once up, both times in bad weather - and did not find it too hard. You can (and should) follow a faint track all the way. As you go downstream - when the track gets too faint - then it is time to cross. Look for a crossing log (or wade the river if its not too high) - then look for tracks on that side. One problem is which falls are the real McCoy Falls (there are quite a few small waterfalls along the way). Its about a half day walk. It may be worth searching the forum for "never never" to get more details of the route.

If you have more time and the weather is good - then its really nice to go via the Traveller Range - a great place with fantastic scenery. But you need to do some route finding.

Dave

Did this with tastrekker back in the early 1990's and we stayed north of the Mersey in the myrtle forest with generally nice open going, negotiated a couple of small easy clifflines to maintain our altitude and remain in the myrtles, then descended to the Mersey just before Hartnett Falls and crossed the Mersey there only knee deep to join up with the OLT.
