Hey all,

I'm after some info....

Looking at a day walk into lake nameless via Higgs Track. I read that Higgs is clearly marked to Lady Lake, but am unsure from there to Lake Nameless.

Can someone please advise of what the track is like south of Lady Lake & approximate time to complete the entire walk.

Also, is the track from Lady Lake to Nameless solid base, or do we expect lots of mud.....???

Any info muchly appreciated...

It probably takes about 2 hours to go to Lake Nameless from lady Lake, and then a bit more time if you want to walk around the lake to the hut (and on the way you have to cross a fairly large stream). Most of the walking is easy - no major ups or downs and no mud - but it can be damp/swampy in places. The track is harder to follow that the track up the hill - you do need to look out for markers and ducks (cairns) as you walk. I think the most common markers are upright stick poles - and they can be hard to see in places. Its easy to wander off the track, but not too hard to find again (eg go back to the last marker and scout around)

This time of the year - there may be lots of nice scoparia in flower.

So the walk's achievable comfortably in a day..?? How long would you estimate from the start of Higgs to Lady Lake....we are mad keen photographers, so we need to schedule time out to take some (lots) snaps.. ..!!

Depends on how fast you walk up hills. Its not a bad climb - a reasonable gradient and you start off relatively high. I have always done it carrying a big pack (10 - 14 days food and gear). It may take an hour or two? The best place for photos is on the plateau, not on the way up. But the best time to get photos is dusk or dawn - thats why its nice to go up fora while and stay in one of the huts or camp out. Its a great place.

My first walk to Lady Lake took about 3 hours (with my father who had to walk slow for medical reasons).

When I did it solo, it took just over an hour (maybe an hour 10, I think?).

With other groups it took us about 1 hour and 30 minutes, I think. I suspect this is a fairly normal time for most people.

From Lady Lake to the Ironstone Hut at Lake Nameless, it takes between 2.5 and 3 hours. A little less if you just want to get to the lake itself, and not to the hut.

These times are all based on carrying a full overnight pack. Of course you may be able to significantly reduce these times if you only have a day pack.

I see that it's a bit of a climb.....compared to WOJ via Trappers, how do the two match up..?? Are they on par..??

My daypack only weighs in at about 6kg, including my camera gear & tripod...so should be able to maintain a reasonable pace. Unsure about the others in our group.....

Yes, it is quite steep up as far as Lady Lake Hut (or about 100 metres before the hut). It is definitely a bit steeper than up to Trappers Hut.

Right then.......

Trapper's was no real issue....should be all good..!!

One other thing.....it shows the start of the track leading from Westrope Rd.....is this accurate & is it signposted..??

The turn off onto Westrope Road is quite clearly signed (the wooden sign there points to at least one of the walking tracks I think (Mother Cummings?), but I can't remember if it mentions Higgs Track specifically). Near the end there is a branch off to the right to Higgs Track. I'm fairly sure this has a sign saying Higgs Track, but I could be wrong. This last stretch of road is quite rough. It's OK for 2WD, but you need to take it slow.

Somebody with a better memory than me may be able to clarify on the signage.

My Topo map is pretty close to your description, but i think experience is sometimes better than a map....

Anyone else been there lately..????

Hey Guys,

Im also heading into Lake Nameless on Sunday (with Thomas), just wondering how long, from the Lake to the top of Fourty Lakes Peak? Looks like a climb of 150m, approx 1k from the hut.

Anyone done it recently?

It's a really tiny mountain (good views over a lot more than 40 lakes though). I'd say the walk from the lake to the top would be maybe half an hour, one way. There is a cairned route that starts from behind the toilet, which is a little to the left (looking up from the lake) of Ironstone Hut. From memory, the cairns weren't easy to find all the way up, but once you get started from the right spot, the climbing is not difficult (it's a little trickier if starting from other locations, which I've also done).

I've never lived down the fact that i never made it all the way to the top of The Throne. I can be a little funny with heights sometimes.....especially if there's nothing to hold onto..!!
