Log Books Unusable in WOJ Park

Postby Son of a Beach » Mon 14 Feb, 2011 10:26 am

Just a quick note, hoping that some of the PWS people that visit here may be able to do something about it. I've heard that PWS are short staffed, but the log books in the WOJ area need replacing.

I didn't bother opening the box at Ephraim's Gate, as last time I went past there it was empty. The box at Lake Ball, had just a few scraps of paper in it, none of which had any blank space left.

Even the log book in Dixons Kingdom hut was full of various small books, pads, and loose leaf pages, none of which had any blank space on any of the pages.

I didn't bother attempting to write in any of them over this weekend just gone, as I wasn't convinced it would be of much use.

is there a way for us walkers to replace / assist in the replacement of log books or is it best to give a yell here?

I am sure there would be opportunities. I will let the folks know and when the books are available they can post here for volunteers. The staff at Mole Creek are responsible for the books at the Walls.

In my discussions with Parks people re this, Nik, I am of the view that they don't want to know how many people are using the tracks at the two spots you mention - not DK Hut. They are a little more active in respect of the Never Never I suspect.

Again this is my view only, I suspect that if there was a clearer picture of the number of people that actually walk in the WOJ - from all the possible entry points - there would have to be a huge increase in the amount of maintenance and upgrading of the various tracks and walks requiring more financial investment than is available, hence the 3 monkeys approach...

The registration/logbooks around Parks are used for a variety of reasons and may be installed for various periods of time at various locations. There can often be a focus in one area for a season or two when specific data is required.

Some of the reasons for the books are:

For checking peoples movements in the event of search and rescue
In huts to get some idea of occupancy rates - occasionally supplemented with general campsite occupancy books/surveys
To correlate impacts against use on specific sections of track (damn hard in a place like the walls!)
To correlate between other measuring devices (percentage of people that register as against those that pass a hidden pedestrian counter)
To get some idea if initial intentions are the same as actual walk undertaken

Alas - lots of walker registrations does not lead to $$.

Which reminds me:
Phil, the logbook at Lake Vesta has gone walkabout. Also someone's left the container open and it was half full of water when I went past.
At least I removed the big bag of rubbish someone left there hanging on a bush . . .

When I did KW1 that log book was totally unusable also.

It was fine on monday this week. Someone had even been there recently with a pencil sharpener!

I think they just forgot to grab it when they left. It was a big trip for OPR; as well as that bag, I filled a small supermarket plastic bag with bandaids and gum wrappers and foil and the like, scored a battered plastic water bottle (near Columba) and a foam mat (left at Cygnus). I had more OPR than my own by the time I made it back to Scotts Peak.

Oh, and the ropes on the tent platforms at Oberon need to be replaced. There's little more than a few thin shreds of fibre left on most of them.
Although the Haven platforms manage without ropes, so maybe it doesn't really matter . . .
