Walls of Jerusalem Camping

Postby under10kg » Tue 22 Feb, 2011 11:11 am

Hi Guys,
It has been years since I walked in the wall of jerusalems. I was wondering which is the best campsite to stay to do day trips in the walls area.
Cheers

It depends on which day walks you want to do from your base camp. Which walks are you interested in doing from there?

I was thinking of camping at Dixons kindom hut area the first night.
I was wondering if there is a better campsite?
Day walking around this area the next day like mt Jerusalem.
The weather on the coming weekend does not look to good.
Then down to lake meston day 3
Then to junction lake. Day 4
I would continue down the never never to the overland track. Day 5 and continue to pine valley for another 4 days.

I am heading up to the WOJ for the first time, planning to start at fish river get to Dixon's kingdom hut set camp and get up mount Jerusalem first day.
Then second day, Solomons throne, king Davids peak and the temple and maybe get a dip in somewhere then head out day three. Not sure whether I am going to exit via
junction track or backtrack through wild dog creek (suggestions ??) This should give me a good introduction to the area, and a thirst for more intrepid exploration next time...

I am really looking forward to this.

The camping is nice at Dixons with toilets now too. Only problem may be the numbers you might be sharing with.
Have a nice trip, beautiful area all of it. You could camp there 4 or 5 days to explore well.

Hi under 10 ...
I did the trip last year and at the time there were a few camped at Dixons.
We headed a short way up the track towards Mt Jerusalem and camped in a broad saddle area before the track branches off Mt Jerusalem (easy to find -you won't miss it)
Nice flat areas for a few tents and the views are superb-esp the sunset colours of Mt Jerusalem if the weather is good
Have a great trip!

Thanks all for the comments. I have not heard about my brother and partner who live in Christchurch, so that is a worry at present. My brother designs Aarn Packs. Hopefully he was walking!
Cheers

My brother Aarn was bushwalking when the earthquake struck. His partner was in the second story of a building in town when the front wall fell off. Fortunately the ceiling did not collapse and they got out safely.
Had perfect weather at the walls and up Temple and got up Walled Mountain from pine valley hut on a day walk with 1 foot of snow. Walking with runners in snow is fine as long as you keep moving! One of the best days I have had in tasi with so much snow on the surrounding mountains.
