Plenty of Fagus turning around the Labyrinth and the Acropolis already. Maybe plan those Fagus trips a bit earlier this year?

I've been watching the Poplar trees around here as a guide, they've certainly been going off early this year so I reckon the fagus will be early too.

That figures... especially on the year when Easter break is about as late as it can possibly get!.... <sigh> :|

That's a bit of a worry as we are planning an Easter trip to Mt. Murchison. As there are probably many others planning similar Easter trips to hopefully see the fagus at it's colourful best, can anyone doing walks in any good fagus spots post an update on this thread. That would be much appreciated.

My understanding is that deciduation is based on day length. Given that, it probably won't be much different to any other year, unless we get heavy and early snows.

I made the exact same comment after a recent trip to Launceston. The Poplars have turned and Autumn is very early this year.

Was on Mt. Murchison today. It's certainly on the turn up there already. Should be at its best in a couple of weeks!

Any fagus updates, especially for Mt. Murchison?

Is there a way to see this if I'm without a car?

Anyone been to the Tarn Shelf lately? I would like to know how it's going there if possible, would save a long trip when time is at a premium at the moment. Thanks

Not much happenning at Tarn Shelf yet. I had staff up there yesterday and only a handfull of branches just starting to turn. Same for Lake Fenton patch on the road side. Probably a couple of weeks off yet. Looks like the traditional Anzac Day weekend might go close!

Cheers

I visited the Labyrinth in last weeks blaze of April summer sun and was interested to see the fagus didn't seem to be much different from the first post in this topic which showed it starting to change mid March! This weeks cold snap might bring it on, but I wouldn't recommend a special fagus viewing trip up that way much before the traditional ANZAC day. There were some yellow and brown leaves around at Lake level (Elysia), but overall the landscape was still green, and all the patches I could see up on Geryon were still completely green. The ranger I spoke to didn't think it was going to be an early season this year. Still a glooorious place though, and the still weather gave some classic Geryon/Acropolis reflections in the lake, but that is probably a discussion for somewhere else!

You can see it is still mostly green around the Labyrinth. The reflections were working very nicely though!

...always complaining about the weather, you must be a fully fledged Victorian these days :P
Seriously though I did have to contend with a 5 knot Easterly, and all that sun.....

Nothing quite as spectacular as ^^^ but...
Trees near the Block stream at Lake Fenton, Mt Field NP.

Lake Fenton area.

First time I've seen them, so was very exciting.

I wasn't complaining, just asking for something a little more photogenic. You should have seen some of the conditions I was walking in. The camera was a useless weight for too much of the time.
