Quolls

Has anyone else noticed a drop in Quoll populations in their area?

I seem to be seeing significantly less in the Cradle Mt area. I've also seen more cats this year than ever before which may have something to do with it. Please if you see a big ginger around the Interps Center, hit the accelerator. I can't help but admire it though, I had it in a spotlight once and it's really muscly and impressive.

There was a very inquisitive one at Lake Vera hut just this past weekend (Frenchmans area).
I think he was the resident, darting in & out from under the sub-floor space.
Probably too far for moggies to wander, thankfully...

There has been a family living in and around Kitchen Hut for years, dont recall seeing them last summer Joel?
Love those tiger cats Stu, i'd always thought they were more timid till we met one at deadmans bay, fascinating entertainment.

Not in the Cradle area, but a photo I got of one down the Southwest last time I was there...

Well, we are supposed to have them but I've never seen one up here. They are well and truly on the threatened species list on the mainland. I have seen the ones around Kitchen Hut (and inside it ), but it was several years ago.

Ther was a large group around Pelion that i haven't seen in a while, the story behind the beuracracy trying to deal with cats around that park would generate more than one of these and these (sorry, they should have no place in such a great topic) (edit... actually they do but its such a shame in the presence of such unique and beautiful creatures)

I see quite a few at night on NE roads. I even rescue my dogs from one in my garden in C'Town a couple of months ago. I heard the dogs going stupid one evening and went to see what was happening. The dogs had cornered a quoll, who was hissing and had a hand up ready to slap, so I grabbed both dogs and dragged them back to the house. When I got there one of the dogs had a very *&%$#! nose, I returned to check on the quoll but was nowhere to be seen. They may look cute, but as Astro will tell you, they can be vicious little suckers.

I'd agree, ive handled them before, they have a 180 degree mouth and 360 head turn as well.
No match for a feral moggy though, especially the youngsters.

Nuts, that sounds like a good strategy. I didn't even have to wait, or be quiet, for this guy. He/she was happily vacuuming up the crumbs that had fallen on the floor from from people eating their lunch. Kept running in and out of the hut and between people's legs. It was funny to watch but I doubt that it's a good diet for them.

I was down at Honeymoon Bay last month, and we didn't see a single quoll. They are usually all over that place.

Last time I was a Pelion Plains (Early last year) there was a lot of them running around the camp, I'm heading out there soon again so I'll make a note of it.

There was a family at Ted's Beach last time I overnighted there. Least shy quolls I've ever seen - one tried to get into the sleeping bag with me.
