Bushwalk Australia

Recently through the shorter and colder days I have found myself looking at maps and guide books at future trips, and with this thinking of my bushwalking goals.

Since I bought my copy of Abels 2 , the Abels have become my primary aim and should take many many years to complete. I also hope to complete the North East, Central and Cradle sections of the peak bagging list. If I manage to complete these I may try and have a go at the whole peak bagging list.

I am interested in anyone elses goals or ambitions, even if they arent really peak bagging orientated.

*These are my peak bagging goals, there are plenty of other great trips I hope to do in Tasmania that arent included in these lists.

The Abels eh? North East and Central regions? Need to get you into the SW a bit more I reckon

I keep changing goals and have no intention of finishing the pb list, and tend to change plans depending on what others are doing and 'life matters'.
In short there are some must do mountains and there will be a whole bunch of others to keep me busy in the meantime.
There are a number of range walks I HAVE to do, bagging peaks along the way of course, among them being DuCane/Franklands/Spires/POW/Eastern Arthurs etc etc

In Tasmania I also like to check out as many waterfalls as I can, am really keen to see Meander Falls in mid winter and Reynolds falls looks great too.
I'm also interested in historic routes and any lasting remnants of the people that have gone before, indigenous people in particular, but also the early explorers/trappers etc

On the mainland I have a huge list of things, I really want to circumnavigate Uluru and explore Kata Tjuta and Purnululu NP and other areas of the Kimberley and Pilbara, Lord Howe and Hinchinbrook Islands.
I'd also like to spend some time on the Main Range in NSW, the Larapinta Trail, Flinders Ranges, Stirling Ranges and I'm sure there is something worth seeing in Victoria too

I also would like to camp in a number of different spots throughout Australia(way too many to mention).

Oh, and I'll go back to the Western Arthurs given any opportunity

You've missed Kakadu, Dan, it's a wonderful place to walk as well.
Let me know when you go to Reynolds Falls, I'm pretty keen to get there too.

Bushwalking goals? Just to get out and do some walking would be good, but there just seems to be too much to do at home. And I have a major problem in Tassie - I'm a wimp and don't like the cold!

My biggest goal at the moment is Mt Wright, and probably Bonds and Reeds Peak as well. WA's one day, but I'm not sure about the knees holding out! I'd really like to go back to Feder as well, but considering how many places I haven't been, going back is probably not going to happen. Diamond Peak has been a lifetime ambition...

Yeah, The Abels, closest thing Australia has to The Munros.
North East and Central are my two local areas, and although there is a few cruddy peaks in there most actually have a bit of interest. I particularly like peaks that involve multiple modes of transport to get to , such as my planned trip to Cape Barren Island
The SW is amazing, after only 3 trips down that way it is a truely awe inspiring part of the world. But the chances of me completing that section of the PB list are remote to non existent.
You missed the Eldons off your list of range walks . I didnt think you guys had done that yet.

Nice few peaks there Taure rana, good challenges too. I hope you got out for a walk over the summer after I met you

HaHa yeah The Eldons is the next one and plans are afoot so I've already ticked that one off
Plenty of the SW peaks can be done as a daytrip from C/Town doogs, have penciled in Nevada for August if you're keen.

Yeah Kakadu is on their too Rachel, as is Karajini and many more that don't spring to mind.... Will let you know when I get around to Reynolds Falls, will probably do it on my next multi day trip to Cradle, no plans yet though

Goals:
1) To live long enough to get back into the WArthurs, even if it kills me.

Everything else is secondary to that. Although doing all the Abels would be neat.

My goals are for the Labyrinth type areas; craggy peaks dotted with lakes with a few exceptions:

To get back to the Labyrinth, camp high on walled mountain and camp at Helious. Climbing surrounding peaks of course.
Tyndalls.
Geryon South
Bobs
Southern Ranges to Pindars
Western Arthurs
Lake Rhona and surrounding peaks
Leonards Tarn and surrounds
Olympus
Gould and the Guardians (Marion Circuit)
Jukes
Reynold's Falls

Did I miss anything noteworthy?

Lists are nice but I try not to make it a primary interest, altgough, if there is a peak on the list around I will climb it.

I guess you had a point, but for some reason things like Federation are not as high on the to do list as the above. Not to say I wouldnt like to get there sometime (wouldnt all of us?).

And I guess that's why I started this thread, to see what other peoples bushwalking goals are. I am with you MJDAlessi, I will do Fedders one day but it isn't in my immediate plans, I am scared it will be an anticlimax.

Climax is a certainty, particularly if you get this sort of weather from the summit...

It's hard not to be elated on Feds, combining the amazingly rugged surrounds with the adventure of getting there & the ascent itself (not to mention getting down & safely back to camp; cue celebration 2) + number 1 ambition of most walkers here, interstate & often abroad.

For me personally, having done a large chunk of the main list now (538 points), the main list is still not my main objective & probably won't be; too much time required invested in horrible scrub bound trips & too much sacrificing of everything else in life (partners, family, other recreational pursuits, career etc.). It's great fun but just not the be all & end all; in some ways it may be an anti climax to finish the list...oh, so thats it then huh...mmm...well...what next?

Having done a large chunk of the Abels as well this is probably a reasonable goal as is the Connoisseurs list, they are my main walking goals.

To finish the following trips will see me very happy as well & quite content to do 1 big trip each year; so still to come for me...

Eldons & surrounds (later this year)
Prince of Wales range (full traverse, including Olegas Bluff)
Spires et al.
White Monolith Range
Propsting
All of the Reserve Peaks (nearly there anyway after Eldons)
Retrace Alex Sklenica's trip from Pedder to Gordon Camp via Olga River Valley (old Tramp article inspired, horrible sounding but what an adventure!).
Do Cradle to Cynthia Bay via all Mountain Ranges (where possible - i.e Pelions to Du Canes to Labyrinth to Manfred et al. to Olympus etc. - repeats so nice to just meander along again & re-enjoy this amazing area).

Return to Fedders again
Return to WA's again
Return to Franklands again (time permitting)

+ overseas ambitions - too many to list here.

Thats a pretty demanding list you have there! What about Norold? or have you already been there... The picture in Chapmans book makes it look like it would be up there with the Propstings etc.
Oh and just out of curiosity, how are you going on the reserve peaks? Do you count the Eldons in that?

Mt Norold is on the Connoisseurs list (pm me your email adress if you want a copy).
74% the way through zone 4 (which includes the Reserve); not including the upcoming Eldons trip, should only be a few stragglers after that trip.
Done the hard yards as a single man & now not so single so time not so available, happy to plod along from here, plenty of time

So have you climbed Norold? and what do you have left apart from the Eldons?

No, haven't been to Norold yet, one day hopefully.
Apart from the Eldons i have a handful in that zone, Inglis, Granite Tor, Remus, Back Peak, Proteus plus a few others.

Unfortunately the further through these lists you get the harder they become; either maassive drives or multi day trips, you tend to burn through all the day walks and easy overnighters, two nighters pretty quickly.

Just focusing on a big trip (7+ dayer) each year and a handful of other shorter trips to keep the tally ticking along.

How about your ambitions and short term goals?

save, quit job, retire, walk tas, travel until money runs out..come home, reunion tour, make more teeth, walk tas, quit job, travel until money runs out...find myself a mexican mistress

As I mentioned above, I love doing peaks but am not really interested in the full list. Long and scrubby trips do not appeal to me too much at the moment seeing there are so many areas I want to return to and visit that don't involve epic scrub assaults that last days.
Reserve peaks (Pelions, Du Canes, Gould area) I'm already excited about a possible Geryon South attempt

Gould is one of my favourite peaks & one of my early forays into the southern Reserve, the first view popping up on to the ridge blew me away & I was hooked immediately. Must get back there again myself; as you say, so many fantastic places to re-visit & re-appreciate, for such a small island there is so much to see.

A full traverse of the WA's including West Portal is highly recommended & really only adds a day or 2 onto an A-K trip anyway.

A trip to the Jukes area early this year was fantastic, we did it as an easy overnighter & got the most unbelievably still & clear conditions - magic!:

Bobs will alwasy hold a special place in my memory as me & a mate did it as a day trip - oh for that fitness of a couple of years ago now

A trip through the Denisons (again) at the end of last year was mostly enjoyable, the hot traverse of the Stepped Hills was a little tedious tho:

A passion for the wilderness / mountains over a passion for lists is important to keep in perspective IMHO & sharing the adventures

What was hauling packs up Jukes like? I also like pushing my limits with day walks, but am not sure how fit I am. A few weeks ago I did my favourite walk in the Hobart area, Wellington Falls Circuit in 5hrs with a lunch stop and a few breaks. It was not a big struggle and I feel as if my boundaries are far beyond that. This was woith an added 2km because I had to backtrack. So how fit am I?

The best way I have found to test how far I can go in a day, is give myself a target, and a turn around time, and seeing if I can get to it. I found that I have been able to judge how far I can go from that. I know that I can put in 10-12 hour days and still be moving if I have to. I have made good ground on some unrealistic winter walks by doing this. Motivation can also increase your fitness levels. And the more you walk, the fitter you get!
Jukes can be done as a long day walk if you wanted to, but its the driving there that makes it better as an overnighter. It is very high on my list of walks for the near future, as are many others. Unfortunately uni keeps me busy at the moment, so walks are few and far between.
