Frecinet peninsula circuit - carry packs or daywalk?

Postby Justcameron » Fri 21 Oct, 2011 11:40 pm

Coming to Tasmania with my mum around Dec 20. Plan to fly to Launceston arriving 10am and hire a car. The plan is to go to WOJ and walk in to Wild Dog Creek, camp for two nights with a day to explore the walls between.

However if the weather forecast is pox we might go to freycinet. Now the question is will it be easier to:
a) Walk in to wineglass bay campsite. Camp 2 nights. Do a daywalk loop around Hazards Beach, Cooks Beach, Mount Graham (possible Mt Freycinet,) back to camp Wineglass bay.
or
b) Walk in to hazards beach campsite, camp 1 night, carry packs over Mt Graham (possible Mt Freycinet,) camp wineglass bay, then out.

I will be carrying a big pack with most of the gear, mum about 40L. Mum has done the Overland track but with cradle huts, she hasn't done any "snail" walks before (carrying one's house on one's back.)
I have done the Huon, Mckays, Port Davey, South Coast Circuit as well as the western arthurs.

Option a) ... less lugging weight up hill ... pretty long daywalk for people who don't bushwalk regularly

Your walking history sounds like you should be fairly fit ... I'd go for Option b)
Can't get enough of cruisy-paced overnite outdoor trips

Why Hazards Beach?
I'd go Wineglass Bay night 1 and Cooks Beach night 2, walk out via Hazards from Cooks or the reverse.

Definitely Wineglass night 1, then Cooks night 2. The track over the mountains deposits you right on Cooks Beach. Day three walk out via Hazards Beach and take the coast track (nice and easy) back to the car park. Added bonus: tank water at Cooks.
I hope you have a great time with good weather whichever walk you go for!

+1 for three days, we recently did it as a two day walk and day one to Cooks beach was just a tad taxing, day two was easy :)

you could walk it in two days staying at cooks beach over night (7 hours walking over the gap and mt graham), but it would be nicer to camp one night at wineglass bay and one night at cooks beach.

Three days is my vote too. I did it in two days last week. 4 hrs to Cooks Beach campsite. Then a long 9 hr walking day back to the car via Mt Freycinet and Mt Graham.

The wineglass bay campsite smelt a little funny thanks to the stagnant creek bed that runs through it. Cooks beach was the pick of the campsites. Hazards probably second.

cooks has tank water, hazards has no accessible water, wineglass is beautiful beach side but as above has a stagnent creek that can be full of mozzies in summer.
