Mt Wellington Circuit

Postby kozevian » Sun 04 Dec, 2011 12:40 pm

Got a few free days coming up. I've got no car so I was thinking of exploring some of the 'ol mountain.

Out of interest, I was wondering if anyone has done a complete circuit. Would an overnighter be a feasible option?

I've been perusing my map, and if I left from Neika I could shamble / traverse around in a circuit ending up at the summit and then following the fire trails back down toward Cascade Brewery. Would there be some places on the far side of the mountain (from Hobart) that I could pitch a little 1-person tent off the beaten track? I'm aware that camping is not encouraged, I suppose the alternative would be to do a overnighter somewhere in Mt. Field.

Any suggestions would be great.

There is good camping in the moor on the way to Mt Connection(in a stand of eucalyptus), have also seen some good spots around the Collinsvale peaks, plenty of fire trails to pitch on :P

From Nieka you could head up cathedral rock, over montague thumbs and continue up onto the thark ridge past the big rock cairn. Follow this till you hit the summit road and follow it to the pinnacle, head along the south wello track and aim for the milles track, (either via potatoe fields or ice house). Then either head out to wello falls or snakes plains back to nieka! There are some ruins of an old hut of some kind up on the thark ridge not far from the track where i'm sure you could pitch a small tent, or you could always sleep in the oberservation tower

Thanks for the advice guys!

It turned out I was a few hours ahead of schedule, and reached the pinnacle road a bit early. Managed to pass by Wellington Falls and around. The top of the mountain was fantastic with a really eerie, low-lying mist much like the Planes of the Dead from LOTR! Some good camping places as you guys suggested.

Ended up hitching a ride back down from the summit. I will certainly check out Montague Thumbs and the route down to Collinsvale next. A great variety of day hikes.
