Mt Jukes Walking Trail

Postby Voltron » Fri 06 Jan, 2012 6:02 pm

Hi there!
I am new to the forum, but i was wondering if anyone could help me with some information regarding the walking trail at Mt Jukes. We are heading down to Tassie in a few weeks, and were hoping to re attempt the Mt Jukes Walking trail. I have seen some older posts on the forum, from members who had made it up to the upper Mt Jukes Lake, and was hoping for some pearls of wisdom :). In 2010 we tried unsuccessfully to climb up to the Upper Mt Jukes lake, but only got as far as the tree fall (about 1km up from the Rock Cairn on the side of the road). Has anyone been up recently? Does anyone know an alternate way through to the Cirque or Upper Lake? Also is there a possible route to the upper lake from Proprietary Peak?
Thanks in advance!!

Looked at it before and seen the Abels notes, have not been up but as far as I know there is a track to the lake, scattered, pretty much useless mining tracks on the Proprietry Peak slopes of Jukes, a track in from the south, all off track from there. Off track to climb Jukes itself.
Recent Peaks: Snowy South, Ben Nevis, Victoria, Blackboy, Bastion

By the "rock cairn by the side of the road", are you referring to the one opposite the Iron Blow turnoff? If so, I drive past twice a week and have been planning on walking up there on day for 5 years now!

I was up the peaks on the Jukes plateau on monday and to descend from there would be too steep but you do get a great view of the lake from the slopes of Pyramid Peak. I put a photo on the where am I game in another section of the forum a couple of days ago of the lake :) hope that helps.

No the rock cairn i am referring to is on what was known as the "Kelly Basin Road". Its just a very small cairn.

There is a rough track over the ridge to Propriety Peak and it continues on the the Mt Jukes summit. From there it is easy off track walking to anywhere you want to go on the plateau. Obviously the lower down you drop, the scrubbier it will get. I was there about 6 months ago and someone had blazed a trail with a machete up to the ridge from the road, made the ascent very easy. Even if you don't find this, it is open button grass up to the tagged and cairned route .
