Mt Claude

Postby newwalker » Mon 30 Apr, 2012 4:22 pm

Hi All,

I am relitively new to bush walking, well Ive been out of action for a while, however a couple of us "mothers" want to walk Mt Claude. We were wondering if people recommend doing it from O'Neills Rd or from Olivers Rd. Time is no problem, however the weather is taunting us. Any tips or info would be appreciated :D

Best access is from the Round Mt Lookout (I think that is Olivers Rd). Just follow the road up, then there is a track to near the summit from the communication towers. Be careful climbing to the summit, especially if it is wet. There is a chockstone that must be crossed to get to the top, alternatively, there is a cave that you can climb up to. It has a conveniently placed rope with some loops in it for foot holds. Some forum members tagged the way to the cave a few years ago, but it is still a little hard to find.

Have fun!

I think there is a sign saying "No Unauthorised Access" or similar, but you just walk past that as it only applies to vehicles.

This route has the big advantage that you start higher up so the total climb is less. However, since it is also shorter it is a steepish walk until you are nearly at the top, but not difficult unless you want to get to the very topmost point. Since you work back and forth up a ridge line the views are great to both north and south.

If possible, arrange a car pickup at O'Neills Rd so you can make a circuit of it. That way you get more downhill than uphill. :D

Thank you so much, we didn't quiet bag the peak, but went up to the fire tower in the sleet and had a view of clouds, bahahaha, but it was awesome. Im assuming we were supposed to follow the blue arrow not the red one. We will have another go in a few weeks. It was fairly easy. Thanks :)
