Hi,

I am a newby here. We as a family done few walks in Tasmania
- Overland (with mt Ossa, Oakleigh etc)- was quite good
- Frenchman Cup - we found it a bit more effort/mud than kids would like
- Walls ( main area + mt Ragoona) - was really great
Started thinking about new walk in December - and would be nice to get any suggestions.

We are Melbourne based, so any walks that require two cars (for start and finish locations) would be a pain.
Are there any obvious locations where you can go and spend a week in mountains while keeping two kids happy?

Plenty of loop walk options up around Kosi.
Wild flowers are very nice on the alpine plains in Dec.

Around Lake StClair - Shadow Lake, Mt Rufus, Little Hugel then on to Pine Valley, Labyrinth, Acropolis would be good because you could set up base camps and do day wealks with lighter packs.

Yep, when we done Overland track 3 years ago we skipped the Labyrinth, so might be a right place to go.
Is Labyrinth similar to WOJ?
I thought that there are plenty of schoolkids on holidays (December) in Pine Valley, is it correct?

Is DuCane range quite tough to get on? I saw beautiful pictures of mt Massiff, but not sure whether it would be suitable for us (we have good off track experience but walking with the kids means that backpacks are heavy).

I'd suggest if you want a look at Massif, head up from the Lab and out to the DuCane highpoint (there's a cairned track most of the way) and then you can get to the edge of Big Gun Pass and have an explore from there just as a day trip. Doing the rest of the range traverse is a little more technical.

I wouldn't really be taking 11/13 yr olds out there, but I don't know how capable your kids are. Keep in mind there are a few spots with some largish boulders where the gaps between could easily swallow up an adult, let alone a small child.

I met a bloke with 2 children about this age or a bit younger walking the Western Arthurs some years ago. Not that I'd recommend it.

The main problem with kids in the Tas Bush is weather. They can manage fine in good weather, but don`t have the resilience needed for bad weather.
