Favourite International Walks

The Kepler's great, did it in a day and a bit in November, snow up to knee height in plenty of places, fantastic !!!!
The Routeburn is great too, got it lined up for a one day hit in early March.

Kili is ok, but all the good walks in NZ and Tas are more spectacular and less crowded surprisingly.

Kepler is ok. You done the Routeburn in winter, Wayno ? OR anyone else for that matter?

The Caples in particular is very beautiful. Well worth a visit, and a good option if the weather is less than perfect. See my pics at -

day 3 in Dave's trip photos has changed. The track has changed to a new more gradually inclined wide benched track over the section where Dave's trip is shown descending.
part of the track on the ascent is being rerouted to improve the track underfoot.

Twelve months ago or more, the boat ride closed too. The jetty at the Glenorchy end wasnt up to scratch. Three separate parties werent prepared to fund repairs so ... Bus and gates. I doubt it has returned?

the local Maori Authority (Iwi) who had authority over the boat landing and crossing of their land were charging a fee for each trip. making it uneconomic to keep running.
also the boat driver had numerous complaints against him for driving at full speed regardless of the conditions, it was a 7 metre boat. put people off wanting to take the boat as well was killing business.
the boat won't be back any time soon.

Believe they owned the plot of land. They wouldnt upgrade, the boat driver renting the wharf, fairly, couldnt see it as his responsibility, and the authorites said ... regualtions shall be met or you dont use it at all. To be fair the boat would have handled anything you could throw at it. Whether the passengers could or not. There are a lot of non boatie sorts about.
That doesnt mean the jetty doesnt get used at the ramps that are used all the time, just not by commercial tour operators.

I took the boat on a rough day, there were a lot of alarmed faces on the passengers, i've been on a few of those boats but that was really rough, but I thouhgt it was fun, not really fair on non boatie types though.

There are a lot of walks mentioned here that I’d love to do. A personal favourite of mine is the Coast to Coast walk in the Ol’ Dart, St Bees to Robin Hood’s bay. But you have to go via Haystack and Helvellyn to really appreciate the Lakes District. I have walked the Milford Track and Tassie Overland – loved them both. With the C to C I could sit back and have a pint at the end of the day. Suppose you could argue that it is 16 day walks strung together – but it will always be up there with the best of them.
