Usually in France along the GRs the norm is this : you can pitch your tent near the refuges (huts), but you can't elsewhere. There's a fine, and park rangers monitor this. You can't just go camping where you want in the bush like in the Tasmania wilderness. Have you ever hiked in France ?

I walked the GR52 in 2004 as the final stage to the Mediterranean instead of continuing on the GR5. The profile shows my stages which were quite short apart from Vallee des Merveilles to Sospel.
I have a small web site of the route which I need to restore. Will post again when I have done this. It has plenty of detail.
This was one of my bivoac sites.
