Kungsleden Maps

Does anybody out there know which are the best maps for the Kungsleden Trail in Sweden and where I might be able to purchase them?

I'm thinking of walking the trail in late August early September next year, probably south 2 north.

Not sure where to buy the maps out of Sweden, I think we bought them in Sweden just before the trip.

Bought the book "The Royal Trail through Arctic Sweden" online before the trip though, very interesting:



The book goes north to south though

Cheers photohiker, I've got the book already but the maps in it are pretty ordinary. Which maps did you buy? I might be able to find them online somewhere.

Ok, found two maps. One of them is only for roads, no offroad and no heights. The other one is the Fjallraven trek map:



Only goes from Nikkaluokta to Abisko...

Also, when we started to get info, I downloaded info from streetmap and loaded it on my GPS.

I am planning to pickup Calazo maps when I get to Sweden when I do this. See here:

You'll need I reckon at least - Kebnekaise, Abisko och Riksgränsen then Nikkaluokta, Ritsem och Vakkotavare and Saltoluokta – Kvikkjokk

Or since their Lands site has put their maps up for free what I have also done is gone to Lantmateriet.se

Here you can export your own map to PDF. In the Dropdown box on the top, select "Fjallkarten" and it will display the area for you, then you select your preference for portrait/landscape in the left hand side, select the area with the box, and click Create Printout. When it's done you download your PDF. You'll have to do this a number of times to print the whole route. Careful of your zoom range, 10km doesn't show up well, but 5km and lower looks better.

If you use iphone, this is free and you can download sections for offline use.

I use android and Oruxmaps, and while it can download WMTS maps, I can't work out how to get the Lantmateriet source correctly yet. So I've got my maps from openandromaps. Haven't compared the contours (SRTM3 20m) against the Lantmateriet yet either.

Thanks guys, you've given me a few leads that I'll chase up. I'm thinking I'll try and buy the Calazo maps online as it would make it easier to have them while I'm planning the walk.

I'll put a post up when I get them, re the cost and delivery.

bigkev - Also I should add, if you have a Garmin GPS, there is this Swedish guy Örnsätrarn who has already taken the Lantmäteriets open data and created offline maps for Garmin/Android in kmz format:

I've only downloaded his Oruxmaps maps version so far. Being Lantmateriets sourced info, it is exactly as the printed maps.

The Garmin ones he has done are kmz tiled custom maps and depending on how old your Garmin GPS is, he has done some smaller tiled versions, or larger versions if you have a newer GPS that can handle more tiles. He has put an index up cleverly in an excel spreadsheet for the smaller tiled ones.

If anyone's is interested I managed to get the Calazo maps sent to Australia by a German company https://www.mapfox.de

Around 1 week delivery time which I thought was pretty good.

Now I've just got to hope that there aren't too many fires up there next year. Bugger me, it's one thing watching out for fires in the Aussie bush in the drier months, but I was thinking that I should of been sweet in near the Arctic Circle.....interesting times!

I bought my maps directly from Calazo. I sent an email via the website contact page, they replied swiftly, sent me an invoice (via PayPal... I don't have PayPal, but it was also payable with my credit card!) The postage was 70SEK (around $11) and they arrived in a week!

These maps are beautiful!

I got the Plan and Go book, which is okay. It has the basic info for what to expect, so it sorted me out with all my questions.

I hiked the entire Kungsleden northbound (Hemavan to Abisko) in 2015 using the Claes Grundsten book, compass and a GPS. The trail is really easy to follow, so most of the time you don't need anything. But a GPS is always useful. I went cross country a few times in search of a snowy owl.

The Kungsleden was wonderful! Perhaps I was also lucky with the lingering snow that made it more pretty and the fact that it was a lemming year, because I saw so much wildlife including snowy owl and arctic foxes!

Hi Guys,

We'll the Kungsleden come and gone so I thought I'd jump back on share some thoughts.

Maps turned out to not really be an issue. You can pick paper maps up in Stockholm and in many spots along the journey. The track is so well marked that unless you are heading off piste a fair way you will probably not need them, I used them more for planning the walk than when I was out on the track. I found the Cicerone Guide good for planning food, ferries and Fellstation stops.

I walked south to north and was a little concerned about organising the ferries without having a phone with a local sim. It turned out too not really be an issue as the boats were all still running on a timetable even when I went through in early September, there were also enough other walkers around that someone would always have a phone that worked to call ahead.
