amputee returns to ruapehu where he lost his leg

At about 8:20pm on September 25, 2007, Mt Ruapehu erupted without warning, sending 1.4 million cubic metres of mud, rock and water crashing down the mountain.

When the eruption hit, William Pike and James Christie were tucked up in the dome shelter, right on the rim, and right in the path of the lahar.

Rock and lava smashed through the door, trapping William and leaving him bleeding and hypothermic. James had no choice but to run for help.

William said, “Tell my parents I love them”; James replied, “Tell them yourself." William did – he lost his leg, but survived.

Four-and-a-half-years later, the pair went back up Ruapehu, artificial leg and all.
