Its getting close to my Piz.
[The pictured peak is the most popular mountain climb in the area, but out of sight and a bit further east is the highest peak in the range at over 4000m.]

From a train?

Bernina?

Edit: whoops didn't read any of the clues from this arvo. With that in mind I change my answer to Palu

Piz Palu over Glacier Palu and Lake Palu [written as Piz Palu over Vadret da Palu over Lagh da Palu]

I was actually after Alp Grum - the name of the railway station/chalet, but that was too many entries back.
You are right about the Bernina Express though.

So over to MM.

The highest in the area is Piz Bernina which was seen a bit earlier in the train trip.

Lets stay in Switzerland.

Can give me either the pass on the bottom left or the peak on the top right? (either will do). Or the peak I'm climbing if you like...

Can't fill in all of the blanks, but that's the Weisshorn on the top right isn't it?

Maybe from one of the tracks near Gornergracht?

EDIT... since you look close to the head of the valley, maybe you're climbing somewhere near Klien Mattehorn?

Yep its Weisshorn.

Was just above Furggji pass on my way up to Mettelhorn. Went up from Zermatt via Trift

Yep. And part of a "great walk" (should narrow it down)

Hmmm.... All my adventures to NZ to date have generally been a little off the beaten track (haven't done any of the so called Great Walks) but in an effort to keep this moving I'll take fairly wild punt and say that you may have been on the Tongariro Northern Circuit?

Its definitely one of the Great Walks I'm willing to consider (love the barren and volcanic landscape around those parts).

Lets stay in NZ. Which mountain am I on (behind me) and/or looking at (top left)?

No traction? Hmmmm ok.

Will give you a picture clue – this was us cooling our New Year’s Eve drinks the evening before, a little below the mountain pass connecting the two mountains in question.

Right - perhaps harder than I thought.

C'mon I'm asking for pretty much the 2nd highest 'free standing' (I'm using a fairly loose term here) mountain in NZ! Also the 2nd shot I put up has the highest mountain in NZ in it!

Hmm across the Tasman Sea.. hmmm might be Tasman.
But there are a lot of peaks around Mt Cook. [and I have no idea which one in the photo is Cook..]
However- lets try Mt Tasman looking at Lendenfeld Peak. The pass would be Engineer Col?

Yeah you are right about the number of peaks in the area. I have spent a fair bit of time in the mountains around there so perhaps was being a little ambitious with this one.

No not Tasman. I am considering (hence my fairly loose term comment) Tasman and Cook as being on the same range and hence Tasman not so 'free standing'.

Another hint - Between the peaks in the background and where I am standing in the second photo is a very big glacier..........

Presuming that you would place Sefton in the same range - I would have to shift to something like Malte Brun across the Tasman Glacier.
And I think that is the one in view - so you would be climbing Aiguilles Rouges [which we were on in France...!!]

Yep spot on. We had planned to climb the mighty west ridge of Malte Brun but the weather window wasn't optimal. Boy I'm glad we made that decision as the blizzard (still to this day am not sure if it was actually snowing/sleet or was just the wind blowing snow/ice at us) that hit us on the way down that afternoon was phenomenal.

Your turn.

It looks quite dramatic. I am afraid I seldom wander above the snow line.

We will stay in NZ.
Try and name one or both of the 2 middle peaks - I suspect my location will be difficult - but you can have a go. We were not using ropes or ice gear.

A few have had a look now.
I was a bit cheeky with this one. So this is a wider shot at another time from the same place.
The peaks in question are now in cloud in the centre of the photo.

This should make my location much easier, but the question is still the name of 1 or both of those peaks.

Looks like the view from Mueller hut. Not sure about those mountains though. Possibly Malte Brun- although that would be too coincidental.

Yes you're right, it is Skaftafell. And it's definitely worth a visit. The name of the peak is Kristínartindar and it has an awesome view on top of two parallel glaciers either side of the peak.
