Yes - patience is very important these days.
Plus time for folk to think about it - all a bit busy lately.

Back to Switzerland - name of the peak.

eggs, having read about it and seen some films about climbing it, I believe that's the north face of the Eiger, possibly from from Kleine Scheidegg.

Correct John - the North Face of the Eiger.
Somewhere up on that wall of rock are some windows where we hopped off the train that tunnels through the mountain and gazed out on the scene below.

I think there are a couple of those plus the infamous "gallery window", sometimes used for climbing access but more often for rescue purposes.

USA. Name one or more - the mountain I'm on and/or specifc location, this national park, the endangered species of my two local friends.

Your hints suggest you are on the slopes of Haleakala, in the national park of the same name, near the park visitors centre.

Not a duck man but while I'm here I'll have an obvious stab and guess the Hawaiian Duck!

Spot on location MM, over to you. FootTrack also gets a point for correctly identifying the Hawaiian goose (Nene), state bird of Hawaii.

Haha yep, I did claim my lack of knowledge on such things (chooks are another matter!).

I don't have my photo archives on me so I'll post a random one. Someone will surely recognize the mountain in background - where was this photo taken? (ignore my blurry child in the foreground). Photo taken in Switzerland.

I think that's Lake Geneva so the mountain will be in France, but I have no idea which one.

Here's one from South America. I will accept the name of any nearby mountain, canyon, church or town. This may be a bit tricky, and I'll post additional photos if necessary.

I'll join the guessing game. Although the first photo is not familiar at all, the 2nd looks a bit like some of my photos from Colca Canyon country, Peru.

It's not in Peru, Mountain Madness. But it's certainly canyon country.

Here's a photo taken as we approach the stream bed, about to enter the canyon (which starts just beyond the left-hand edge of the second photo).

Rightho I'll take a little bit more of an educated guess now and go for Palca Canyon, below Illimani.

You are correct, MountainMadness. I'm super-impressed that you homed in directly on Cañon de Palca without any further guesses. How did you do it? Do you have an app that shows everything around the 3590m contour?

Here's the photo that was going to be my next clue, showing the canyon with Illimani in the background.

20151120_133113.jpg

The canyon makes a great day walk, accessible from La Paz (the capital of Bolivia) by bus to Huni, the village in the second photo. The canyon bottom is flat gravel, so there's no technical difficulty, but the canyon walls are amazing. The walk ends in the village of Palca, from which there is sporadic transport back towards La Paz.

Hey I'm not going to give away my trade secrets!!! Nah ask the olds and they would tell you I could read an atlas and map well before I could read a book properly. Photos told me you were in desert canyon country, which typically only covers a handful of South American countries. Pretty much all but Bolivia had been discounted, had a 2 minute look at the big mountains and canyons in the area (thanks google earth) lead to my educated guess - there are fairly striking vertical features on that canyon. I like to rely only on my memory and my own photos but sometimes after a few guesses and days I'll pull the good old google earth out....

Back to NZ. I think the valley we are descending into is too easy so I'll like to insist on you naming the actual mountain we are descending. If I get no bites I'll give more clues.....
