The ridge at the back is the major clue.
Sort of rhymes with lump.
And it is not on the West Coast.

i'm not posting anymore, eggs guesses tall the nz posts, i cant post anything that is half obvious because he guesses it. and if i post anything more obscure , no one else seems to know.
i make a point of not responding to most of the nz photos to give people a chance but this is turning into a two horse race... and i dont see that as the point of a thread like this, its to give everyone a chance and there only seem to be a small no of people with the experience to guess a lot of what gets posted here.

Dear Wayno - I want to thank you for asking for this game.
This thread plus the where in Australia thread both arose out of a desire to mimic the "Where Am I" in Tas thread.
In both cases the ability to bring up places that are mostly unknown is greatly multiplied, and unless something is "obvious", few have any interest to chase down the clues.
So you rightly note that it ends up being a few hangers-on plus the odd newbie that make up the traffic.

All 3 threads are now suffering from a large number of previous players having moved on to better things.
However, it is clear that the Tas thread still has a wide base of interested and knowledgeable players. Which matches with the blog originating as a Tas bushwalk site.

There are periods when there are large lags up to several days or more and posters pull out by giving the answers.
As one of the hangers on - it means that there has not been time for analysis or life is too busy.
However - we once asked who is interested in the thread but do not answer or post. There was some positive response to that question - meaning that the purpose of the thread was not just participation, but also educational.
Part of my interest is in fact to check up on details from posts I did not participate in.
New places get added to future planning all because people post hard shots or just a few people are playing.
I consider the Tas thread for instance to be a huge mine of information about Tasmania for anyone wanting to research it.
I would be keen to ask that question again. SO CAN PEOPLE PLEASE RESPOND HERE IF THEY FOLLOW BUT DO NOT POST!

NZ for me is actually quite hard to answer, as in this particular entry - needing to survey the coastline maps and ending up in a less than obvious first call.
And there have been quite a few from NZ I have had no chance on - eg the recent one you answered in Arthurs Pass.

If you did not keep posting it would be a huge loss.
Given the Australian percentage of the readers and the nearness of NZ, I suspect most posts would come from there.
So your participation ensures the thread stays alive. I suspect if you go - it will simply die.
And I am happy to bow out of the entire thread if it would allow you to feel free to keep posting.
As for the aim of getting new people involved, the trends from other threads is that numbers wax and wane slowly over time, but in general, more tend to leave than get added.
I think that is actually quite understandable. But it means that such games have a high probability of dying out.

In the case of posting hard ones - and I think my current entry falls into that category - Over time more clues are added - like the fact this is on a beach near a major track on the south coast near a hut which incidentally we visited without hiking in.

i'm amazed at the small no of people who answer on the thread, either not a lot of the forum members travel which i doubt given the sheer no of aussies i've met in nz or are not interested in the international where is it thread...
its hard to pick photos that arent too easy and have been done before or not too hard that it rules out too many people from being able to guess...

I follow this topic and enjoys the photos but I usually don't know the answers.

Given the clue, I'll guess that is the Hump Ridge in the background but I would only be able to give a very vague guess of where the photo was actually taken.

Happy for you to go next Tyreless.
It is indeed Hump Ridge.
There are 2 huts along the southern coast track - west from the ridge.
We had taken a boat tour from Lake Hauroko along the Wairaurahiri River - out into the sea for a spot of fishing, and then into the Waitutu Hut / Lodge on the banks of the Waitutu River to cook up a fish dinner before the return trip.
This was from the beach at the mouth of the Waitutu River.
The tour operator was struggling due to poison bait laying in the area, so I do not know if it still runs, but it was a great trip.

Could this be a tarn on the slopes of Ben Nevis?

Quite a way east of Ben Nevis. Although on a clear day you can just make out Ben Nevis from the peak that is nearby this waterway and is known by the same name.

Yes, that's it. The summit itself may be referred to as Cac Càrn Beag, meaning "small cairn of faeces" in Scottish Gaelic.

Looks very much like Marlborough Sound country.

I'll have an educated guess and go for Blumine Island. And another guess at kayak for mode of transport.

The photo does show a slight oil slick which indicates that a boat has come and gone. So I'll guess that you hitched a ride on a luxury cruiser. As for where it is, that's a toughie ... NZ has so many islands.

Have to admit (due to agreeing with ribuck on the amount of islands in that area) I had to bring up a map to align some of them to get my guess.

Sticking with the same country but moving inland - either name the mountain the photo was taken on or the mountain opposite the ridge in foreground.

Not Earnslaw. Aspiring would be closer if you were there (yes Aspiring is in view). Earnslaw is in the photo though.....

I had hoped to get to Brewster Hut but certain conditions and choices saw us driving past the start of the route up on a glorious morning - but too late to use it.
But I can't make out the hut in the photo - might be a bit dark.

Yep the hut is there in the photo in the little clearing on the spur directly off the mountain (sorry lowered the quality).

Im not privy to the politics of this game but I'm of the opinion that Eggs has got this one.

I've only been involved in these games for a relatively short period of time so not sure anyone cares of my view. But I think if eggs knows the answer he is entitled to get it. If he is getting a lot of answers in a row he may choose to answer at his discretion (ie wait until a while and if no one bites then goes) but ultimately it's all fair play. I agree with tyreless and eggs that it's an interesting and educational game worth keeping up, and would be regrettable if knowledgable and faithful members (including Wayno) decide to boycott

Yes. I was sitting back thinking others might step in.
I presume you were on Mt Brewster looking back to Mt Armstrong.
Your view appears to be over the Brewster Glacier.
[For those interested - with limited time this would have to be one of the jewel locations to visit, rising immediately off the road through Haast Pass to a lesser visited hut.]

However, anyone can go next to give others a chance to contribute.
