Dear Wayno - I want to thank you for asking for this game.
This thread plus the where in Australia thread both arose out of a desire to mimic the "Where Am I" in Tas thread.
In both cases the ability to bring up places that are mostly unknown is greatly multiplied, and unless something is "obvious", few have any interest to chase down the clues.
So you rightly note that it ends up being a few hangers-on plus the odd newbie that make up the traffic.
All 3 threads are now suffering from a large number of previous players having moved on to better things.
However, it is clear that the Tas thread still has a wide base of interested and knowledgeable players. Which matches with the blog originating as a Tas bushwalk site.
There are periods when there are large lags up to several days or more and posters pull out by giving the answers.
As one of the hangers on - it means that there has not been time for analysis or life is too busy.
However - we once asked who is interested in the thread but do not answer or post. There was some positive response to that question - meaning that the purpose of the thread was not just participation, but also educational.
Part of my interest is in fact to check up on details from posts I did not participate in.
New places get added to future planning all because people post hard shots or just a few people are playing.
I consider the Tas thread for instance to be a huge mine of information about Tasmania for anyone wanting to research it.
I would be keen to ask that question again. SO CAN PEOPLE PLEASE RESPOND HERE IF THEY FOLLOW BUT DO NOT POST!
NZ for me is actually quite hard to answer, as in this particular entry - needing to survey the coastline maps and ending up in a less than obvious first call.
And there have been quite a few from NZ I have had no chance on - eg the recent one you answered in Arthurs Pass.
If you did not keep posting it would be a huge loss.
Given the Australian percentage of the readers and the nearness of NZ, I suspect most posts would come from there.
So your participation ensures the thread stays alive. I suspect if you go - it will simply die.
And I am happy to bow out of the entire thread if it would allow you to feel free to keep posting.
As for the aim of getting new people involved, the trends from other threads is that numbers wax and wane slowly over time, but in general, more tend to leave than get added.
I think that is actually quite understandable. But it means that such games have a high probability of dying out.
In the case of posting hard ones - and I think my current entry falls into that category - Over time more clues are added - like the fact this is on a beach near a major track on the south coast near a hut which incidentally we visited without hiking in.
