Actually I take that back.
I think you are at Artichoke Valley looking at North Col.

tasadam, I will give you the win.
But I think I took the pic from near Tahune hut.
The prominence to be named was on the right of the pic - "De Gaulles Nose"

My apologies, I should have looked up the definition of "prominence", the bit sticking out, the bit that is "prominent".

Anyhow, how about this?

Tricky indeed.

yeah I figured it'll be a bit too hard if you can't actually see what is crawling on the beach. But robl has got it - its Buckles Bay on Macquarie Island, looking South along the east coast. Still a Tasmanian National Park after all...

Well done - over to you robl!

Without reading, I just went scrolling back to see what I've been missing out on.
I'm looking and looking and scratching my head, thinking maybe since my last visit theve changed the scope of the game to include NZ or something??
Macquarie Island? How in the blazes did you manage to score a trip there? [swear fiter}
I should have zoomed in...

Long story but I ended up being a 'visiting scientist' on a tourist boat going to Mawsons Hut in Antarctica. We stopped over at Macquarie on the way down for 3 days and in the Auckland Islands on the way back up. I was doing some work on Zooplankton - was all rather fantastic actually - saw some absolutely amazing places. I think I liked Macquarie almost better than Antarctica though - the wildlife is just incredible.

If you're interested, there is stacks of photos to be found here.

I think you will find your Frenchman's picture is from the rise in the track just before descending to Tahune
- whereas Artichoke Valley is further back [about 500m] with no view of the Frenchman until you climb up the ladder at the end of it.

Incidentally - how much zoom in your comp post? I can think of a peak with that angle - but also with another one further away looking past the north shoulder of the closer one. The angle of the 2 portal towers at the rear is what is suggesting it might be from a spot further away and a bit further north.

robl

Is that an official name of the prominance?
I thought that peak was called Lions Head?

Yeah, I went flicking thru my Frenchmans photos in such a hurry because I finally struck an image I thought I knew, that I didn't take enough notice of my own photo location.
Certainly the view of the area in question appear to be an exact comparison. I must go back there, it's such a great place.

There's not much zoom at all, the exif info shows it as 44mm but that is on a camera with a DX sensor, so it is equivalent to a 66mm lens - just a little more zoom than your standard 50mm lens. The image is not a crop, either.
I don't know whether that zoom helps you with your calculations about which peak or how far away.

I guess we could keep the game moving along.

Your information tends to rule out Mt Pillinger, but I suspect you are not on the peak but at the base of the Pelion East tower - looking towards Mt Ossa?

I am indeed looking at Mt Ossa. You have correctly ruled out Pillinger. But I am not on Peloin East, nor am I at the base of the Pelion East tower.
And I take great satisfaction in coming up with an image that you didn't guess first go, oh Honorary Game Master...

Keeping it moving as you say, time for a clue.

I am about an underarm cricket ball toss in distance from a "high place / summit".

Well done tasadam
Not sure about bestowing titles though...
There are a lot that I get wrong and even more that I don't even try for.
My problem is that I love the challenge and spend too long on the computer.

I guess I was trying to discern in the dark part of the picture and figured I could see the hump of Doris in the distance.
I still think there is something there which should be Doris - and being to the left of the portal it still suggests Pelion East - but maybe the peak on the north end of that ridge - unnamed in "The List" .

eggs, I sit corrected.

Lions Head is the peak to the south of N Col.
can be seen here

I was mistaken in thinking that De Gaulles Nose is the rock face with the nose that appears in siloette. (others may make the same mistake)

The rockclimbers route "de Gaulles Nose" is actually on the face of the Frenchman. (where it should be :))

That is indeed where I am, almost on the summit of the unnamed peak to the north of Pelion East, a most amazing place and a real surprise!
Away you go then...

I have to commend you for that last one.
Its good when we get posts from places rarely visited.

I'm still going with really easy for now.
I guess there should be a bonus for naming all the peaks you can see.
And how many lakes can you find?
The file is a little small due to restrictions - but click on it for detail. And the stitching is a touch ragged in a few places. :(

Easy enough bauera

Rogoona on a fantastic day.
From this vantage point you can see the peaks of the OT from Cradle to Rufus laid out along the horizon.
You can even see Frenchman's Cap in this one just behind Byron. I love the way Pelion East & West almost line up.
The lakes are a bit trickier. The one on the far right is Lake Rowallen - a hydro lake. But Junction Lake is just discernable amongst the trees on the far left.
Not sure whether you spotted it - but I make the count as still 7 because the next 2 above Lake Myrtle are actually the one lake!

anyway - over to you.

Indeed I am, although the sadness of that is somewhat offset by the memory of the past 4 days spent doing some excellent day walks in the north of our state. A photo from one of which I posted last night. Obviously the majority of the forum community is off doing what this forum is about. And good luck to them. Many jobs to do today so I will check back irregularly to see if anyone has worked it out.

Nope no idea... just got back from a walk around the city though that doesnt really count, it was over 30degrees according to Jims oasis! too hot for me :(

Hmmm Nope no idea... but I'll have a guess if it'll start some clues rolling.... Mt Everitt? or the Gog?

Not Everitt or Gog Range. If you can work out what the mountains in the distance are you should be able to line it up pretty well. Not a particularly high mountain but one which the Nomenclature Board had some interest in 20 or 30 years ago.

Is that Acropolis in the distance on the left? If so that's about the best I can do, I don't know where you are but I remember seeing a not too dissimilar view from the west coast, could have been the Lake Plimsoll road (Anthony link road).
I don't think you are on that road, by the way, but possibly up one of the mountains in that area, Tyndall range somewhere? Not trying to have a guess, just seeing whether my observations can help anyone else.
I really should hit the maps and work it out, no time though.

tasadam

it won't be the Acropolis. The square one is part of the same range as the peak at the end of the ridge.
One is called ... Peak and the other ... Bluff

However, the angle and foreground range suggests this is not from Mt Murchison or the Tyndalls - and I suspect not even Mt Farrell.
So that suggests one of the lower peaks to the west of Cradle/Barn Bluff.
