The funny thing is, that photo looks familiar, but I haven't the faintest idea of where it could be.

OK, quick game's a good game, they say. Time to drop some real hints...

Reading all the clues and looking at the pic, I can see one of two possibilities in a general area kind of speak.
Either up on the Ben Lomond area because of how much flat land there is that is at such altitude, or somewhere around the Hartz / Picton region.
The thing is, that track marker in the centre foreground of the pic is pretty long - indicating not only snow, but that it is a track that needs following in snow.
Looking at the light, I can assume you are looking somewhere between north-west and south-west depending on time of day.
The fact that there were some reasonable sized trees growing up there before the fire is interesting too.
Assuming that dome is over the horizon, I'd guess it sits around 1150 metres.
I'm favouring the north-east but need to hit the maps to see if I can nut out the peak to help on the location.
One other option is Field area - does that jog anyones memory?
Course I could be wrong on all counts.

Trying to solve these things with just clues is not as easy as it sounds.

Thark Ridge is "over the back" of Mt Wellington.

No, Thark Ridge is up on Wellington somewhere. Out from Big Bend. I walked out there years and years and years ago, which is why that photo looks familiar. Trouble is, I can't place the exact position he's shooting from. My memory isn't that good.

Well done I suspect - Thark Ridge Wellington is getting lots of google hits.

I have a photo of Thark Ridge from the top of Wellington,
but 1000m places him in the saddle to the south west from that ridge [correction - slightly north - mostly west]
The other clue is Mt Connection and Tom Thumb (re Fielding) - all of which surround this particular saddle

Unfortunately zooming in with google satellite shows up a lot of cloud or smoke
But Thark Ridge is long a thin and rocky, so I can only presume the peak is Tom Thumb.

well done scavenger! you did say it looked sort of familiar, and you were right.
From (north side of) Thark Ridge (lisping the word Shark from the clues ) looking toward Tom Thumb (Henry Fielding's book) and you can just make out Mt Connection behind the trees on the left.

Bit over half way up Cradle Mtn, Marions Lookout in the background.
It's the only place I have seen those steel poles used as markers.
I picked it from the pole before I picked it from the rock.

You're right on the top of Cradle, aren't you? I have a shot of the rock in question, but it's still unedited and the file is too big to upload.
