Not Samoa. You've gone from almost correct to thousands of kms away. You were previously in the right country but on the wrong island. My last clue was a bit cryptic but solid.

I thought your clue referred to Sa-moo-a but you were obviously referring to Moo-rea Maiao

Yes! Moorea is correct. The less developed and arguably the most rugged and spectacular of the three islands we visited in the region, Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. And the only one where I did a proper bushwalk.

I imagined you finding the roughest, scrubbiest bit of Wellington shoreline to ensure it was a bushwalking photo.

Thanks eggs. Yes looks like plenty to do around there, although if visiting that region I'd probably want to do my bucket list Tongariro Crossing.

Staying in NZ. This might be a bit obscure but I'll give it a go:

Correct. In the sluiced canyon section of it, remnant of the gold mining days. Beech forest slowly reclaiming it.

No takers so far - Mou Waho Island. I've driven from Queenstown to the West Coast around Lake Wanaka but unfortunately the road bypasses this.
And I don't think I could see it in the distance from the Wanaka foreshore. Looks like boat is the only option.

Correct. The tiny island you can see is in Arethusa Pool, a lake on Mou Waho island, which is on Lake Wanaka, which is on the south island of NZ.

So when you swim out to the tiny island you are on an island on a lake, which is on an island on a lake, which is on an island.

Boat or kayak are your access options. Water taxis will take you there from Wanaka. You will almost certainly see Wekas.
