A beautiful stretch of Valentines Creek but the fish were tough and scarce.

Hi MFF,

Thanks for the trip report and photos, some beautiful country, it would be interesting to see how high the trout go up the valley.

We did not make Grey Mare Hut on our recent Bikepacking trip, after riding/pushing our 26kg bikes and gear for 53k we stopped at the base of Mt Jagungal for night 1 and then headed over to the Tooma for a fish, we also fished the upper Happy Jacks River on day one with no luck though Dave had 3 bites, we fished the Tooma for an hour also with no luck but spotted a very nice 3-4 pounder, it spooked very easily when Dave attempted to catch it.

Tony,we did a lot of exploring to find some waters without trout in them.It is all about upstream barriers, whether the creek is marginal ie-dries up later in the season,if somebody has stocked fish at sometime above falls/barrier.Take the fact there are trout above Valentine Falls,it would be a very adventurous and determined trout to make it up them falls so I can only assume somebody has put trout in there sometime over the last 120 years or so.Perhaps the Snowy workers that stayed in the hut put some in so that they could have fresh trout for Dinner.
Half the the fun in what we do is the exploring with every now and then you find a troutless creek but sometimes you find a hidden gem :D It's all about doing your homework and I wouldn't want it any other way
