Hi guys!
Firstly, my apology for not posting this report earlier, haven’t really had any spare time since we got
back from our Christmas/New Yar holidays but here we go again, another lockdown which is perfect
time for all sorts of reports
It won’t be a massive one though as we didn’t do anywhere near what was initially planned but did
have some taste of the area and I must say I’m absolutely in love with it and am so eager to return
there rather sooner than later to explore it more!
As I said, things didn’t go as planned partly because I was still recovering after a minor operation
which took longer than I expected; partly because of border closure with NSW so New Year’s
Eve turned to be an interesting adventure.
So the plan was to leave Jindabyne mid morning-lunchtime, drive to Cesjacks hut, camp, climb Jag if
weather permits, camp at the hut again and next day head to Mawson’s hut either via Bulls Peak FT
or via Geehi forks and Strawberry Hill. Maybe stay at Mawson’s hut for a couple of nights and
explore around (walk to Tin hut, Bluff Tarn etc) and then head back to Cesjacks. I did a massive work
creating all the waypoints, uploading maps to the gps receiver, and was extremely excited about the
whole thing! We registered at Info Centre in Jindy and picked up an emergency beacon too.
Unfortunately, when we arrived at KNP border and after around 15 min of walking I already knew it
was too early for me to carry a heavy pack. So we made the rest of the way to Cesjacks and camped
there for 2 nights instead. Day 2 we did a day walk to Jag which was the highlight of this entire
journey! There were people at the hut who said they managed to climb the mountain in the straight
line but it was overwhelmingly scrubby which we already knew, so we headed SW first to walk
around it. I feel like we really should have made a bigger loop on the way up to make walking easier
but it wasn’t too bad anyway as everything was quite dry so we were able to walk right across boggy
bits and didn’t encounter much scrub at all. But after decent rain the way we walked up would
probably be much worse.. On the way back we just headed straight to the hut. It was scrubby as hell
but on the way down it didn’t bother us at all and the whole walk back took around 2 2,5 hours.
March flies were a nightmare for everyone but for some reason they didn’t like me one bit so I was
the one to enjoy the serenity

That was pretty much the end of our little adventure. BTW, Bulls Peak Creek was extremely shallow,
this is how dry it was there over Christmas and New Year..
We knew we may have to be very flexible so already had in mind that if something doesn’t work we
can also camp at Gungarlin River which we ended up doing, also stayed there for 2 nights and did
some smaller walks around and explored local huts.
Then we planned to celebrate New Year’s Eve somewhere on the coast and also do a Light to Light
walk in Ben Boyd NP but as you know it didn’t go well either so that night we spent in the massive
line waiting to cross the border which took us around 7 hours and in the end they just had to let
everyone in without even checking permits.. We still had 5 days left so spent the rest of it in Victoria.
We still enjoyed this little adventure and I really want to get back and do much more there. We may
do this over Easter long weekend but again, this is subject to covid situation at the time..
Thank you all again who patiently answered all my questions when I was planning this trip, I really do
appreciate it and no it wasn’t in vain as we’ll definitely be back and every advice is priceless!
Regards,
Iryna
