Tanks on Scotts Main Range at New Yards and Byrnes Gap

Hi there

Can anyone advise whether there are still water tanks in working order at the properties at the properties at Byrnes Gap and New Yards/Kowmung House?

While I believe that these are both private properties, I understand that the owners are generally happy for people to take water sparingly from the tanks.

Any recent advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I know there is water at New Yards, but I'm not sure about Byrnes Gap.
I was at New Yards over Easter and there was plenty of water in the tanks. Walkers passing through are welcome to use as much water as they need.

Corker

Corker - thank you! I just heard from the Catholic Bushwalking Club (it is actually Gunatawang Catholic Youth that owns New Yards), who confirmed what you said. Cheers.
If anyone can provide information about Byrnes Gap, that would be great.

Last we were there at Byrnes Gap there was a tap outside the shelter door which worked.
There is even a shower (cold!) at New Yards these day.

Cheers

As of November 2024, the tap on the tank at Byrnes Gap is not working, so water is not accessible.

Hi SummitView

The tap at Byrnes Gap/Pippins Hut was not working, so water was not accessible there.
Question: when you say the tap was not working, what do you mean? Has the handle been removed from the valve-stem, or has far more 'damage' been done?
Was the outer hut still open?

We camped at the north-western branch of Butchers Creek where it crossed the road. There was quality, flowing water. There were adequate campsites next to the road on the grassy verge.
At the gate then? The campsites there are nice - we stopped there once.
The 'flowing' water was not: it was a brown stagnant pool. Not drinkable. I went a short distance upstream to where there was still flowing water deep in an 'alpine creek' slot or groove. It was fine.

Cheers
Roger
