Bogong/Cleve Cole/etc Next Two Weeks

Postby stry » Tue 26 Nov, 2013 5:08 pm

I have a bit of unplanned free time during mid week over the next fortnight, and was thinking of a two to three day wander around this area.

I am just wondering if this area is already overrun, or likely to be overrun soon, with post school year walking traffic ?? If it is, I might go elsewhere.

Any thoughts ? All input welcome :)

There are of course peak seasons, but if Bogong is popular, so will smaller bumps, and more so. As a general rule, the number of people is inversely proportional to the square of the distance form the road and the cube of the climbing. I'm not sure how they relate. You will most probably find a few people on Staircase and other spurs,as well as focal points like the summit, huts, good campsites and rivers. Beyond that it's a big mountain, room to spread out. There's a lot of good sheltered campsites near Cleve Cole. Try due west near the grave (stunning exposed spot for sunsets), or across the creek at the yards, or even further north. BTW, carry a cattle prod for school groups. Guns are proscribed.

 Sorry, tickled my funny bone.

Another consideration is the holiday factor, double the number if it's a long weekend, triple it if Easter.

Peak season - LOL. I entirely missed that. (bit like my navigation.) I think that you are right about the holiday figures, more or less. I think that you have to be a bit flexible regarding camp sites, and accept that there may be more people at focal points like CC Hut. There are sufficient places to escape. Have you thought about West Peak? There's a saddle that's fairly sheltered, or you could stop on the summit. Water down a ways to the south.

Thanks for that Lophophaps. I aborted because of the weather, but I'll keep your suggestions in mind come the new year.
