Favourite camping spot 3 hours from Melbourne

Postby daniel_4tw » Sun 23 Mar, 2014 7:22 pm

Wondering if someone can suggest their favourite camping spot in Vic. I have three days off and looking for recommendations.

Ideally looking for a national park, secluded, some day walks available etc.

Lake Elizabeth is the only place I've been in Vic before. I found it a little crowded, but other than that it was good.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers Vagrom,

Just had a quick look on this site and the place sounds perfect. Being only an hour from Melbourne, how busy is it likely to be? I'm looking to get away for a few days, so ideally don't want crowds of people playing music etc.

Quiet campgrounds less than 3 hours from Melbourne with nearby daywalks are rare. You'll have plenty of busy campgrounds with daywalks, plenty of quiet campgrounds with no daywalk (or offtrack exploration only), but both is hard. For both, it's usually Alpine, Croajingolong or the Mallee, which are all 4+ hours from Melbourne. I think French Island would be a good idea. It's not very busy, and there's plenty of exploration to do. Yes it's mostly a flat island, but birdwatching is great. No car can go there, so you won't have a problem with people playing their big stereo.

Fraser Park in the Lake Eildon National Park, not secluded type camping but plenty of good walks, birds, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, wedgetailed eagles.
The Candlebark campground is the best, well inside the go slow for boats, so the skiers and jet skiers tend to stay in the other one a couple of Km away.

Bear Gully down Cape Lipptrap way, well between there and Walkerville North.
