Looks like a captive reptile display went wrong.

Classic reporting by the Age....leave out the facts if it makes the story more enticing.
After all the object is to sell advertising not provide accurate information.
The story line suggested "Inland Taipan bites picknicking man in Portland" the reality is snake handler stuffs up and gets bitten by one of his snakes.
Doesn't have the same ring though does it.

Clearly I should buy the "local" more often!
I did purchase today's edition, however... apparently Thursday's paper has the local "gig guides" for the coming weekend.

Just to be clear, the thread title quoted was
my take on the original Age article. The actual heading used in the link was
"Picnicker in serious condition after bite by rare toxic taipan"
