Off road bike trip - around the Yarra Valley

Postby nezumi » Mon 29 Aug, 2016 10:32 pm

I am plotting out a 4 day bikepacking trip for some friends and myself over the AFL Grand Final long weekend.

Current plan is:
Day 1 - Hurstbridge train station to Toolangi (camping at the reserve? http://www.findacamp.com.au/camp-site.php?camp=136 ) http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1123425574
Day 2 - Toolangi to Warburton. Camp options of caravan park or somewhere nearby (some want a shower) http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1237106032
Day 3 - Warburton to Kurth Kiln - bailout option of Lilydale via the rail trail for those who can't get Monday off. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1237147783
Day 4 - Kurth Kil to a station - Pakenham? Belgrave?

Mapping feedback (especially of the "that road is unrideable" or "you will die trying" type) is appreciated.

Bikes will be a mix of MTBs and CX with a possible touring bike in there. Some bikepacking, but possibly some with panniers, and maybe backpacks.

The brief is pretty much a credit-card tour as far as eating goes - "As long as I can end the day with a parma at a pub I'll be happy". We may end up having our "dinner" in the early afternoon before continuing on to camp.

Looking to do around 60 - 80km per day. (does this seem reasonable when loaded?) I'm trying to keep it to dirt wherever possible. Nothing too technical, but smooth singletrack is fine.

80km of dirt will require significantly more energy and time than 80 on smooth paved road, so the feasibility will depend on your level of bike fitness.

Do people have to sign up to Map My Ride to view the proposed routes?
Sometimes, I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Cannot see the maps either.

Re: distances, depends how much time
You want to spend on the bike each day and the terrain.

If your pretty bike fit and can handle lots of verticle you might find you've done your 60-80km by ie. lunchtime. Depending on fitness etc id say it isnt unreasonable to cover greater distances each day if your riding for 8-10hrs a day.

The one guaranteed participant on the ride joined me on Hells 500's Ol' Dirty ride on Sunday just past. We made it through that ride pretty well, but the terrain there was... let's say, the notion of riding some of it was ambitious at best. :D
