Water reliability at Bogong

Postby Casparvitch » Fri 14 Mar, 2025 8:13 pm

Hi all,

Anyone know what the water reliability is like up at Bogong (Cleve Cole, Bivouac hut, Michell hut) this time of year?

Any help appreciated, cheers

As always, the hut tanks levels depend on precipitation, the number of people passing or camping, and how they use water. I've seen people with tank taps full on washing. March is the start of autumn, more precipitation likely. My guess is that Bivouac and Michell huts should have water, with Michell more likely to have a full tank - less people go on the Eskdale. Cleve Cole has water from the creek, and this has run dry when there's not been much precipitation. The watershed is not very big. There's always water about 20 minutes east at Camp Creek. There's usually water below Stirling Gap in Bogong Creek.

Thanks very much that's a good overview. Unless it rains just before we go I'll carry camp water. Cheers

CC hut spring has stopped so no water to the hut. Water available from the creek north (front) of the hut. The storms of last week missed Bogong so no tank top ups.

I have just returned from 3 nights in the Mt. Bogong area.
There was water in the stream at the Tee spur/ Long Spur junction. Water was flowing at Camp Creek near the Howman's Falls track junction and good
water was
coming out of a black
pipe 170 metres away opposite Cleve Cole Hut.
On the way up Mulhauser spur 4 WD track it seemed that none of the fern gullies that
sometimes have water running in them were offering any water at all. I had to cut my
way into Mulhauser spur track camping area with a chainsaw since a tree was blocking the vehicular carriage way.
Despite rain falling on 16-03-25 the Snowy Log Road and Mulhauser spur track were both quite dry and not
slippery to drive on .
BYO water if you are going to camp at Mulhauser spur track camping area &
Take a chain saw and know how to use it.
There is no mobile phone reception up there and help is a long way off.

Some reasonable rain Sunday in the vicinity so it will be interesting to see if that changes things.
