I'm looking for a good walk to do in the term 3 school holidays, and I am thinking of a 3 day walk in Baw Baw NP. Does anyone know what the conditions would be like in September? Would dad and I be able to complete the walk without crampons or snowshoes?

Last September school holidays there was snow on the ground (see pic) but not enough to need snow shoes and you wouldn't ever need crampons up there, this year to date it hasn't been a good snow season.

Sounds good Sam, I have been thinking of doing the same sort of length hike up there sometime before Xmas.. Where abouts are you thinking of starting and ending?

How do you do a three dayer on the Baw Baw? You can walk the whole thing in one day . . .

I am sure you could spend a week walking around BB.
I know of a lot of people who do off track walks around the area and our club regularly conducts overnight walks there.
You may have to include Mt St Gwinear as it is also part of the BB NP.
Get a map and have a good look, it is quite rough and tough in places and very overgrown.

You could try this: Start at Mt Erica car park. Follow the trail to Mt St Gw. Do an off trail loop heading north then west to bring you onto the AAWT. Pop over to Mt Baw Baw. Then follow the trail back to the start.

Does anybody know if there is any worthwhile trout fishing in the small creeks on the plain up there? I used to (downhill) ski there all the time as a kid and I have heard that there is trout water up there but am unsure if this is true/worthwhile. Would be a great way to spend a long weekend either way I suppose.

The few times that I've been to Baw Baw, this is how I have gone up. Its a lovely walk in, past Mushroom Rocks and Mt Erica, and once you reach the plateau, its just gorgeous up there. I've camped just before the Mt StGwinear turnoff in a nice opening to the right of the track just before you drop down to the junction, and explored from there.

As for the conditions in September, you're looking at around 10 - 13 deg cooler than it is down in Moe. As long as you have the right cold weather gear, you should be right. I have a memory of being up there around the same time, and it was bitterly cold, one of the two coldest nights that I have spent in the alps. That said, we had the right gear, so we were able to stay nice and toasty.
