Does anyone know if there are any UHF repeaters within range of Mt. FeatherTop and/or the Razorback?
If so which channels are they on. I need comms from Mt. FeatherTop down to Harrietville with a 5Watt UHF Uniden.

Given its pretty much line of sight it should work without repeaters.

Public UHF repeaters are so jammed with crap talk, it may not be an ideal solution to rely on.

Might be an option if you use CTCSS, but definitely not for emergencies.

Edited old URL for irrelevance. Just Google for repeater locations. Easy.

In direct UHF comms the 5 watts does not make much difference. The problem is the terrain, obstacles and conditions such as wind and wet weather.
There may be some places that you can contact Harrietville but your 5 watts will not be the reason you can. I would not be relying on it for my safety.

So the previous comment from tsangpo is very relevant. In terms of safety communications if there is mobile reception all the way along the razorback rely on that.

Who said anything about safety communications? For all we know the OP might just want to talk to his/her mates free of charge.

Your still missing the point strider, if he wants reliable comms off any kind, direct UHF is subject to far to many variables to be counted on.
I suppose he could go up and test the whole razorback prior to the event and find out for sure.

The OP want's comms from the Razorback to Harrietville. Harrietville has mobile reception and the Razorback has reception. Plenty of two-way comm or more apps if worried about cost.

I think that is why he is asking about using repeaters.

Quite right strider (apologies, I didn't explain the aim of my point too well) but there was a suggestion that line of sight was pretty much the case and all should be good which caused me a lot of concern.
It may well be correct and good but it needs to be tested not assumed before it might be relied on. But even with repeater coverage Harrietville is in a deep hole and the ability to use a repeater if there is one needs to be tested and the area of coverage established. UHF is wonderful line of sight but it doesn't take much in the way to stuff it up.

Hey - here I am - and thanks for the replies everybody!

The reason for the UHF is that I will be an official/marshall for an upcoming Ultra Marathon from Harrietville/Feathertop/Diamatina /BHP/Hotham/Razorback etc. Yes we will have mobile phones but am planning to use UHF to supplement the mobile - not for emergency use.
I was going to be running the 68km race but have recently had major surgery which relegates me to general 'dogsbody' official on the summit checkpoint of Feathertop when runners pass then will reposition elsewhere.
