During the Labour day long w/end March 2014
I went on a group hike and we just walked from the Macfarlane saddle to the end of the Wellington high plains to the New campsite near the Old Riddels hut site on day one. We climbed up the ridge to the top of Spion Kopje for the views .
On Day two the leader of the group said we'll drop down the steep Gillio's track . When we got to the Lake it was very beautiful. It was my first trip there. The Water level was low. The leader/slave driver said we only have 25 min.s to enjoy the Lake !He was for real !!!! :-0
Look Left , look right , take a photo that is it you've seen it let 's go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!He was hell bent on getting as far as possible down the Wellington river that day .
I am going to go back and I 'll do this solo or under my own small group leadership on my own schedule next time and just walk in and out from MacFarlane saddle . Anyway I took a cool dip in the lake and then we pressed on down the valley of destruction. Man !, that was tough , slippery , rocky , HOT and fly blown .
The Wellington River track is a real slog in the heat and the scenery is nothing special compared with the high plains and the lake .We ran out of water a few Kms before the first river crossing . We made camp on Sunday about 8 kms from the Cars at the Wellington bridge near the Platypus campsite.Swimming in a deep bend in the river was a welcome relief . The river crossings were easy because the whole area is bone dry and the river is flowing at quite a low ebb . The tracks are open and people were out and about walking them. Parks Vic and the Ranger at Heyfield recommend that you camp at the new Nyambi campsite where there is a Pit loo and a rainwater tank. It is a great campsite .The Local Aborigines also prefer that you don't camp at the Lake. It has voodoo properties , man.
