Howqua River to Mt Buller via Four Mile Spur

Hey there

My map says there's a track running along Four Mile Spur up to Buller.
I tried to find it once but could only find a track going linear to the river.
I think it's overgrown, at least towards the river.
Anyone done this walk?
Or any relevant comments comments

Search Four Mile Spur. There is a bushwalker called Uncle Rumple that has a GPX file for the spur.

The only messy bit will be the growth down low along the river.

Just cross the river, pick your way through the scrub, being prepared to meander around a bit to make it easy going through.

Then climb the spine of the spur. Don't need GPS or compass for that one, although a map might be handy if you drop any distance below the crest of the spur.

If you find a pad on the spur, that's bonus, as long as you don't end up following wombats or deer off your intended route

Forgot to add - make the river is fordable before you leave home. Depending on rainfall, it may be a bit dodgy risking a crossing.

In winter and in Spring fording the Howqua river near where the 4 mile spur track is situated on the map may indeed be risky and very cold .I have thought about having two cars and doing a loop , in summer, of ascending the western ridge and descending via the 4 Mile spur. There are said to be orange arrows pointing the way down the 4 Mile spur from the summit area of Mt. Buller.

Did a west ridge ascent, returning via 4 mile spur yesterday. The 4 mile track from Buller is found just to the left of the net fencing on the corner of the spur ski run. Up top theres plenty of pink tape and the usual orange trail markers. We lost the track briefly on a number of occasions but its easily picked up again. No bush bashing required - did'nt bother pulling the gaiters from their folded down position. The descent is not hard, just somewhat relentless. There are some nice spots on the River to cool off afterwards. Water - I found a snow gun tap at a hole in the netting by the start of the track - water was clear and fast but I imagine its from the storage ponds and would require treatment. Probably best to regard it as emergency source only.
Coming off the walk as the trail hits the Howqua its advisable to take the straight on route across the river as this I think only involves the single crossing. We turned right and had three crossings - pleasant enough after a long warm day.

Don't drink snow gun water. There can be stuff to make the snow last longer in the water.
Whether the additive is through the reticulation system or not i don't know.

I noticed 4 mile spur forms part of the Oscars 100 Hut 2 Hut trail run. Not sure how many people are doing it this year however I imagine they may open up the regrowth a bit. Someone may even do some maintenance?!

Thanks for the West Ridge/ 4 Mile spur trip report . This is very tempting and is still on my list of longish day walks to do in summer, a summer, I don't know which one.
