Mushroom Rocks

Mon 17 Oct, 2016 8:03 pm

Hi guys,

I took a trip up to Mushroom Rocks recently and camped overnight. For those of you who haven't ventured out that way before, Mushroom Rocks is about 30 minutes north of Moe and is located in the Baw Baw National Park. So, very much alpine territory.

The walk itself from the Mount Erica car park isn't overly hard (1.5-2kms) and, if you have kids, I deem it to be kid friendly. What I REALLY like about this place is the random boulders that litter the trail and the Mushroom Rocks area itself. They're pretty cool to look at.

The spot where myself and my friends set up camp was a semi-cave situated underneath two huge boulders. A really nice spot to camp while you're up there. Furthermore, there are several other spots up there to camp and a scout hut as well. However, the hut is closed during the snow off-season and, as the name suggests, I believe you need to be apart of scout group to use it.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can take the 4km hike up to Mount Erica. However, once you get to Mount Erica there really isn't anything to do there.

I would describe both trails as rocky in parts but somewhat easy to navigate. The trail to Mount Erica is a gradual incline so make sure you have the fitness for it. Below are some pics of my trip.

I know exactly where you were camped John. It's a great place to explore and a perfect area for a first overnight camp.

Yeah it was a nice little spot. Not exactly designated like some of the others but you hardly disturb the area to get there or even camp.

Had a nice weekend at Baw Baw. Arrived at Mt Erica carpark at 8:30pm Friday and walked up to Mushroom Rocks with our headlamps to camp. Found the scout hut in the morning then onto Phillack Saddle....gets pretty windy there. Cold and windy on Sunday with some snow in the morning.

Yep, beaut camp in the "cave" area, and all very aesthetic. Haven't been there for years, but a wonderful hike.
