Hey All,
I'm planning on coming to Vic around late Feb with both a hammock and tent in the car. Just wondering if people can advise whether the following hikes are better with a tent or hammock:
Wilsons Prom
Great Ocean Walk
Also if anyone feels like suggesting great hiking destinations in Vic - please go ahead. Might quite like to go the Grampians...

I think both would be fine with a Hammock. Can't see any reason you would need the tent unless you prefer it or the weather looks terrible.

Mount Speculation is pretty nice.
Camping topside and waking up for the sun rise is something I'm dying to do.
Crosscut and Mt Howitt could be a day walk option as well. Or camping at ganger Hut the next night if you're looking for a two night thing.
That's just my two cents.
Out of curiosity, What hammock do you have?

The Grampians in Feb. would be too hot and finding water could be tricky.
I would go with a tent. Tents keep insects and foul weather at bay.
Finding two trees to sling a hammock up in might be tricky in 1600- 1900 M. elevations areas.
The entire Southern area of the Prom is superb ,scenic and not very tough.
The Bogong High Plains would have good weather in Feb.
I did a 55 kms circuit of the Bogong High Plains just recently ( BHP ).
If you have walked the Oz Alps in the KNP then you need to check out the Vic Alps.

In The Vic. Alps I always take a 4 seasons tent. A hammock would be like an ashtray on a motorcycle in some of the mountain weather conditions that can spring up on you.

Hammock = under tree = falling limbs = trouble

Tent under falling limbs under tree also equals trouble!
I prefer tent, as my tent, sleeping mat, and quilt is lighter than hammock/quilt/underquilt/tarp, but I do like the comfort of hammock. I've often thought of hammocking on Bogong at the treeline - eg where the Eskdale and Granite Flat Spurs join - but most of my trips are in. I'd winter. Certainly the little stunted snow gums there would provide hammocking opportunities, as would those around Cleve Cole Hut - if you like a hammock, and have a tarp that provides adequate cover for "doing things " underneath, then a hammock would work.

Do hammocks come with tree protectors? You are not supposed to tie a horse to a tree directly so I would think the same would go for a hammock and someone swinging in it. Perhaps a check with Parks Vic to see if you can tie a hammock off first.

Yes. Normally 1" webbing, so you don't ring bark the tree
