Hi all
Does anyone have the GPS coordinates for Jan's hut in Baw Baw NP ? (Can also be called Stagg's hut)

Hey Wayne,
Went up there yesterday for a look round, spent a lot of time bush bashing once I dropped off Mustering flat and down the creek gully. Gave up, but on my way back up found a sketch foot pad. will go back when the weather is cooler and make it an overnighter. I have been to the hut from Hut road to the north, it took us three times to find it then.

PS Did have my own set of coords but was playing with GPS one day (bored in tent) and managed to delete all my waypoints !!!

Thanks Anne,

Did spend 2 days at Mustering Flat looking for the hut but to no avail. Did see some freshwater crayfish in the creaks on Mustering Flat.

Does anyone have a 1:50k or 1:25k map with the correct location of the hut marked? The Vicmap 1:25k doesn't, and the contours/hydrology on the Rooftop's is a bit sketchy. This is my guess based on the Rooftop's map (see attached), but I don't want to go on a wild goose chase in the snow and scrub in July...

I last visited Stagg's Hut (as I knew it) around 20 years ago but have managed to drag out the map I used on that occasion ( Vicmap 1:25000 Mount Baw Baw 8122-2-4). On it I have the location marked very close to the above (Borbs') position. I have it about 100m to the north-east, just across the creek. I'm not certain whether my position was marked as a result of my visit or to as a guide to where to look but I remember having no trouble finding it. If you get to that spot you should be pretty close.

Transferring the location to a Topo Aus map, my position comes out as S 37 48.253 E 146 18.475. In UTM with a WGS 84 Datum, this reads as 55H 439076 5815681.

Drop 55H 439076 5815681 into Google Earth search and it might give you some more guidance.

Good thought Tastrax. I dropped the Lat/Long into Google Earth and there is a suspiciously roof-looking type thing about 25 meters from that point. Reckon it's probably the hut!

Borbs, thanks for the two maps. I've skied as far as the 1360 metre high ground, but beyond that I recall no snow, too scrubby or too steep. In summer I've walked from the junction at Freemans Flat to Mustering Flat, somewhat steep and scrubby but not too bad. It appears that the blue dashes are routes, not tracks. Is this so?

Thanks Lophophaps. Yeah, the blue lines are possible routes. Depending on snow conditions (anything can happen in July) we'll ski/snowshoe/hike. The plan is to basecamp and ski or do day hikes ... so we were thinking of a day trip to the hut for something different, more to explore than to use as a base, but if weather closes in or something happens, I wanted to know the location of the hut. Yeah, I was aware that it's pretty scrubby down there, which is why I wanted to know the exact location so we don't have to search too much.

Thanks everyone; Jans Hut found. Location is roughly as per the maps above. We walked along the SE ridge to avoid the destructive impact on the fragile morass of Mustering Flat. The ridge was relatively good going, especially with the 10-15cm of fallen snow somewhat weighing down the undergrowth. The snowgums were lovely. Patches of quite thick scrub once you drop off to the hut. We returned via the NW ridge, which is actually a little clearer - large clumps of scrub, but passable. As Mustering Flat is a domestic water catchment, and the soft, tarn strewed flats are quite fragile, I recommend not being a "bog stomper" to quote the Parks Vic sign on Gwinear Flat.

Awesome work Borgs.

A friend and i had a crack at it about 3-4weeks ago but aborted on the SE ridge after Gwinear flat in failing light.

It took us quite a while to get out there and we were progressing much slower then expected so we made the call to head back out to the main track as i didnt want my friends first overnight hiking trip to be a miserable, cold and wet night as i wasnt confident in his sleeping gear had we needed to camp on the snow with the overnight low forecast at -4/-5. The scrub was horrific and the snow seemed to force it against us the whole time, we had to push against the snow and scrub. Was a great trip, however disappointing not to have made it out there. Hopefully we will get out there again soon for another try.

Do you have any more photos of the trip, id love to see them.

Wayne, I have saved the hut in my gps. I havent unpacked it yet etc. but if your doing a trip in there and need the details sing out when the time comes.

I went in there with the 3 sets of coords i was able to source online, and with any of them you should be able to look around and locate the hut altho none of them were 'on the money'.

If seeking the hut sans snow cover, you are bog stomping on quite a bit of sensitive flora to get from Gwinear. Try driving up the formed road, park at the gated track and follow the foot pad up the re-entrant as per the map previously displayed. Off track can be nice but damaging in alpine areas

Hut road has a locked gate where it starts off the Thomson Valley road, so you would need to walk from there.

Hi PCV, my lover and I managed to get there on Queen's Birthday weekend via Thompson Valley and Hut Rd. I'm afraid I don't have GPS tech, but the location on Borbs map and description are spot on. See the post made by Borbs » Mon 11 May, 2015 12:59 pm. We bush bashed up from Hut Rd by following the creek and found the hut by sniffing around once we reached the creek fork. It was very heavy going, with a lot of undergrowth, fallen branches, and entangling bark: so just be ready for some shin scratches and bruises

Also, we didn't find it on the first night as the heavy bush didn't allow much line of sight. We were forced to set up our swag when the sun went down and the rain started up (not ideal for our first hiking adventure together...), only to wake up and spot the hut in the morning light from our soggy campsite!

Hmmm, I'm not sure I did? I enjoyed that the benches around the table were shaped by an adze or some hand tool. Which shelving are you referring to?
