Car camping around Gympie

Postby farkewie » Mon 14 May, 2012 12:58 pm

Hi all,

having a family camp weekend next month, it needs to be around Gympie, or 1-2 hrs north. Looking for suggestions on camp grounds, we really just want to be able to have a fire, and a shower.

Anyone know of some places?

Charlie Moreland Camping Ground.

Camping area features: in an open forest, grassy setting and close to Little Yabba Creek.
Location: the Charlie Moreland camping area is accessed via Sunday Creek Road, off the Kenilworth–Maleny Road about 7 km south of the Kenilworth township. The camping area is nestled close to the creek and native pine plantations.
Access: the Sunday Creek Road access is unsealed and includes a creek crossing.
Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.
Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car; walk-in camping; caravans; camper trailers; (small) motor homes; large groups.
Camp site surface: dirt, grass.
Facilities: Water (unsuitable for drinking without treatment as it is pumped from the creek and may contain organisms that can cause illness), toilets (including wheelchair accessible), individual fire rings (bring your own clean, cut firewood), walking tracks.
Open fires: allowed (except when fire bans apply) in fire rings only. Fuel stoves are recommended.

No showers, but you can take a portable shower with you, one of those popup ones and a 12 volt shower with a bucket of water. Heat the water up in the fire.

The nearby campsites at Booloumba Creek are great. but you might need a 4wd to get through a couple of creek crossings, depends if there's been much rain about. Campfire can be purchased in surrounding area's, Local farmers sell firewood in bags on the side of the road, although if it's busy you might miss out. Weekends the camps can be popular. Overnight temps can get very cold, particularly this time of the year.
