Overnight Hike where to camp

Postby jasonbris72 » Thu 03 Feb, 2022 1:11 pm

Hi All.
As part of my mid life crisis, I have lost a bit of weight and want to do something I have wanted to do my whole life, hike and camp on the trail. I have booked the lower portals to get started, as a bit of a practice run, but I want to build up to do something like the Coomera Circuit walk. I have read online that these are "backpacking" or overnight hikes, but I cant see anywhere that references a camping ground? So what is the deal? Do I just grab a tent a setup some flat? or does this mean that I can't camp along the way?

There's a choice of base camping at Binna Burra & O'Reilly's or walk-in remote bush camping. Bookings & info on the parks website.
Just check the weather & park alerts before you go.

Woonoongoora bush camp on the Gold Coast Great Walk will give your thighs a workout. Easy access from Springbrook or Numinbah valley. Quiet, views.

Barney Gorge Juction bush camp, beside the creek, popular. A little further along from your planned lower portals camp.

Also Skull bush camp not far away, Easy acces, no water, open forest, but a quiet getaway. Nice patch of rainforest under Mt Maroon's East face higher up on Maggie's farm break track.
Mountain views are good for my soul...& getting to them is good for my waistline !

I would suggest the Toolona creek circuit https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/lami ... ek-circuit If you do it clockwise you can camp at the Mt Bithongabel campsite https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/lami ... ithongabel which gives you about a 13k walk the first day and a quick 5k walk home the second. Bithongabel is a bush camp with no amenities, just a flat area and a water soak about 10 min down the track (or you can pick up water at the last watercourse before you get to the campsite). If you search the forum I have a trip description when I did it with my kid.

(It appears to be closed until March to fix the track)
