Mt. Lindesay - Vintage Pictures

The majestic Mt. Lindesay on the border range is somewhat of an enigma being inhospitable to both bushwalkers and climbers. There are no tracks and the ascent is too dangerous for casual walkers yet the stout approach and dreadful rock quality discourages all but the most masochistic climbers.

The mountain presents an unmistakable two-tier wedding cake profile that is more distinctive than the relaxed profile of its higher neighbour Mt. Barney to the west. Mt. Lindesay is also covered in luxuriant rain forest that is home to some of the most spectacular orchids, staghorns and gympie trees I have ever seen. In contrast, Barney has more solid rock with hospitable sunny ridges and many tracks to the summit of both peaks.

I have just posted an album of Mt. Lindesay adventures from 1963 to1980 in tribute to the late Bert Salmon, who introduced me to bush walking and revered this mountain. The pictures include an ascent of Glenie's Chair to the east and hopefully may inspire others to follow in the footsteps of Bert. The link is here:

Great photos tecais which bring back memories of my abortive attempt with BBW on Lindsay in the 1970's. Is this a young Ron Farmer from BBW on the left of this photo I copied from your album?

Good eye there, Ian - indeed, that is young Ron on the left. A true Gentleman, bushman and advocate for responsible resource management. Ron was not so enthusiastic about the climb after discussing the danger with John Comino who was in the first-ascent party. The first issue of the UQBWC magazine "Heybob" has an account of their harrowing ascent.

I loved the challenge and excitement of moving over such unstable rain-forest terrain where every three steps scrabbling up dirt mulch resulted in sliding back two. Mike Meadows was also in the party and our sensible consensus was to retreat as time ran out, even though I had figured out the route up fig roots on the left wall before lurching back into the dirt avalanche. We only had 20 m to go.

Often our best memories are from challenges almost attained than success that soon fades for the next big thing. By the way, I enjoy your posts and feel our paths should have crossed.

Cheers,

Ted

Thanks Ted for confirming that detail. I'll be meeting up with Ron Farmer and other bushwalking "oldies" when in Brisbane next month. I'll have to dig out my old Heybob collection and find that story. Our paths probably did cross in those haylicon days of SE Qld bushwalking, but only a limited number of names have stuck in memory. Bert Salmon's name will forever stick in memory as my first bushwalking experience was a climb of Crookneck with some workmates in 1968, and negotiating "Salmon's Leap" was a memorable experience!
