Bushwalking with dogs

Postby farkewie » Thu 03 May, 2012 5:26 pm

Hey guys,

I know I will probably cop it for asking.. but, I don't think it is a bad idea as long as you enforce the leave no trace rules on the dog as well...

Anyone know some places where I can take a dog for a bush walk in SEQ? Looking for something that is still fun and challenging for us two leg walkers :-). I would really love some option for overnight walks too, but, I think that could be pushing it.

Thanks.

I suppose if it is not in a national park and is within the law, no one can stop people walking dogs in bushland. A friend of mine has this book that might be worth a look for places to go with your dog -> http://www.exploroz.com/Shop/Flat_Earth ... _Dogs.aspx

However, note that the presence of a dog can lead to a 41% decline in birds using an area. See -> http://scienceline.org/2008/04/env-inta ... dogsbirds/
Unleashed dogs will go for small mammals, reptiles and perhaps people too. (I was once charged down by a pittbull in an urban park in Sydney, the owner screaming at me not to move, which I didn't, and the dog just smashed into my leg...I wonder what would have happened if I had ran? It was a fascinating experience...)

I had a similar experience in Perth, I was with my dog throwing a stick in the river for him, the pitbull charged at my dog, I saw it all happening, threw my dog into deep water and got in between them, the pitbull latched onto my knee, the only way I got it off me was dropping it's head(my knee) into the water while punching it as hard as I could. Once it let go I had to pin it to the ground by it's throat for 5 minutes until the owner turned up - freaky stuff, and the cartelage in my knee still hasn't recovered. There are dogs and then there are dogs...

Back on topic, I love bushwalking with my 2 dogs but restrict it to the Bedlam Walls area near home and the odd sojourn into forestry areas. Snakes freak me out in summer so it's usually winter walks.

No idea about QLD sorry :)

Off topic sorry guys, but my dog (small terrier) was attacked by a rottweiler at Kingston Beach last weekend. I had to physically pry her from its jaws while pushing it off with my shoulder. It had attacked another dog 2 mins prior too, and the *&^%$#@! owner didn't have the sense to restrain it thereafter.

The worst part was he just stood there and watched and said nothing. And when I furiously told him to put it on a lead he told me to get f*cked - lovely. Young guy, about 30, heavily tattoed on both shoulders. Beware!

PM me some details as to how to go about this?

She is fine luckily - although now quite wary of larger dogs..

if that doesnt work contact the police, they are also authorised officers under the Dog Control Act, the bloke has broken at least 2 laws.

I used to be a Dog Control Officer - redundancy aint good - 3 weeks out of a job and I am still giving advice :)

If you need any further advice pm me

Sigh, My dog died last year and I do miss out walks together. Funny how you get so attached to a dog.
