Good walks in northern Australia besides Larapinta

Sun 10 Feb, 2013 5:59 pm

Hi,

I've been looking for some good multi day hikes to do in northern Australia, aside from the Larapinta trail, but haven't had much luck. I'd be particularly interested in any in Karijini NP, Purnululu NP or in Arnhem land, but I'm interested in anything really!

So any suggestions?

The Jatbula Trail (5-7 days) near Katherine is very good.

How about fly / boat trip out to the Wessel Islands from Gove in Arnhem land & island hop to its very tip.
That should take a few days.......and some organisation.
Its on my list ;-)

Tabletop walk, 39km, 3-5 days, Litchfield NP, Darwin.

Escarpment walks around the mary river area. Various 2-5 day walks.

Try this book : http://takeawalk.com.au/Z8Main.htm for the NT. Lacks photos and "breathability" in the text, but it's got several multi day walks (you can check the content on the left of the page). Regarding Arnhem Land, I believe it's forbidden to give info unless you already have the permit to go there. So either contact tour operators that go there, or apply for the permit and then ask.

In Purnululu there's the basic Piccaninny Creek Walk, otherwise it's off track walking only. Karijini offers more options as far as I know, but never been there.

After a bit of research, the koolpin creek to twinfalls traverse sounds good.....around the mary river area.
5 days of waterfalls, rockpools to swim in, scrambling, aboriginal rock art & escarpment camping. 8-)
