Mat for the Larapinta

Hi all,

I'm planning on doing the Larapinta Trail in 2025. I'm wonder what effect all those sharp stones and vegetation will have on my lovely air mat. Do I need a closed cell foam mat to place under it? I've seen one report suggesting this is a good idea, and it makes sense to me. A flat air mat is no fun at all.

I'd appreciate input from those that have done the trail!

thanks,

Peter

Did the Larapinta last year. The campsites at all the shelters have good ground and are clear of stones & vegetation. Even when camping away from the shelters it is easy to find spaces where this is not a problem. I used my Thermarest Neoair with no special protection other than the tent floor and tyvek footprint. Had no issues with punctures.

Agree with Turfa that any mat will do.
A footprint is a really good idea - mainly to keep the dust out of your gear.
