Stacks Bluff 22nd June

Sun 23 Jun, 2013 8:43 pm

So the plan was for our group to hike our way up to Stacks Bluff, as training for our Kokoda For Cancer Trek

5am start Saturday morning, got dressed, feed & gear in the 4wd, then just had to wait for another hiker.

5:40 on the road, picked up 2 more hikers then it was the battling drive (from launceston) through the fog to Avoca to meet up with the last 2 hikers.

Arrived at Avoca, meet up with the other hikers, then we set off up to Storys Creek

Followed the direction I got only to get really confused thanks to a new fallen tree across the track to the car park, so back down closer to the old school, then Bang the other car blows front tire, so tire changing time.

Tire changed & cars parked, then it was the next battle find the start of the track, which we found easy

So the hike begun, what can I say it's such a great place. Group was hiking at a good pace, we stop for a quick drink break & to take a couple of pics :)

Rehydrated & back to the hike, so we continue onwards until we hit the start of the boulder field (well we think lol) after a bit of an attempt to continue onwards we had to sadly decide to turn back due to every rock was covered with ice making it very slippery & due to the level of our group & first time hiking Stacks.

So we didn't actually make it to Stacks Bluff but the little bit we did get to hike was great, everyone enjoyed it heaps even with a few slips & trips

Boulder field, south facing, winter and high altitude- a pretty tough combinaton. Take the ice away and it is a great walk. Better luck next time.

The section of boulder field just before you reach the plateau is very steep and with added ice I imagine even an experienced walker would find it too sketchy. I had the same problem the day before at the top of Cradle Mt.
