Mt Anne Circuit photos and trip report

Thu 06 Feb, 2014 8:01 am

Hi all

Just back from a successful (at last!) Mt Anne circuit.

Trip report (with many hints for those that haven't done it) and photos at our walking blog

http://sonsofthedesert-abushwalkingblog ... -last.html

Enjoy! And enjoy the circuit: it is an amazing walk, one of the best two or three day walks in Oz, if not the best..

What wonderful images - makes me jealous and want to get there again :)

I would have to agree, it is the best walk of its length in Australia.

Amazing trip and the geology is also fascinating. Thanks.

Thanks folks!
We are now pretty keen to do the Western Arthurs: would it be right to say it's like the hardest parts of the MT Anne circuit for days and days in a row, or would you rate it harder than that
(of course one thing is that it's long enough that you can't plan for good weather for the hard stuff: weather will come. But you can wait out the super bad weather...)

Yes, that would be fair to say, although they are very different. The Western Arthur Range is more difficult in some ways (steep up and down EVERY day; greater exposure to weather), and less difficult in others (not as much scrub). The biggest difference you would notice would be the geology. The Anne Circuit is largely on dolerite, with big boulder fields and slabs of dolerite to negotiate. The W'Arthurs are largely quartzite, which is less predictable and more "gnarly" than dolerite, and very VERY tough. One other difference is the ease of access. For the Anne Circuit you leave the road and start onto the range. For the W'Arthurs, you have the Arthur plains (mud, heat, tedium) for many hours before you even start climbing.

Having said all that, I still rate the Arthurs the most incredible walking experience in my 34 years of Tasmanian bushwalking,

cheers

Peter

Not quite that bad. The hardest bits of the Anne circuit are harder than the hardest bits of the WArthurs, it's just that there's very little let up in the latter, and it's so much longer. You end each day totally wrecked but absolutely stoked.
