High water level in Rosanne. When I was there that pink sand beach was exposed. It's such a lovely place.

Is this a record? Interesting read.
BTW, just read about John Stuart's unfortunate demise from hypothermia. News print at the time talked about a govt search party with a pathologist going back to the spot, didn't say if they brought him back out. Is he really still entombed there?

Fantastic read and loved the photos Digby.
Google sure brings up some painful reminders of the risks we take venturing in remote places.
This report from an old backpacker magazine (1977) tells of this group finding a crucifix on a rock but no grave then discovered a pile of bones under the rock.

It's incredible how those early adventurers endured. They had no Gortex or fancy membranes nor UL.

The magazine from 1977 includes ads for goretex and silva compasses (and both haven't changed much).

I understand that John Stuart's accident occurred in 1956. An archived news report of the event.

That's a marvellous read. But some things were easier - he's bitching about knee deep mud on the Arthur Plains. Guess what, sonny - it's hip deep now.
