Mother Cummings Peak (Southern)

Hi all, we walked here last week and it was a wonderfull day out. Recent rains have made this walk wonderfull as you follow the creek up to the start of the final climb.
Just a note to all who may be considering walking here though, the road leading into the carpark at the start of the walk has been washed out and now requires an additional 2km walk to reach the start of the track. This needs to be considered as this is an extra 4km of walking on top of the walk itself. We did the walk comfortably in 8hrs with the extra walking. Cheers

It is a great little walk, the forest around & through Smoko Creek is some of the nicest I have seen anywhere & the little waterfalls make it a magical place...I'd like to do it again on a sweltering summers day to take advantage of all the little pools which are absolutely crystal clear. A really beautiful area

The water may be clear, but it is very cold as my mother can attest to. She slipped on the final river crossing!!

Is the road ridable (by Mountain Bike)?

Very much so, nice flat road surface. You could easily ride to the start of the track, stash your bike and walk from there. Only trick would be to remember where you left your ride!!

Walked this track with a group last Sunday 20/11. Superb at the moment .Still good waterfalls and rock hopping is all thats needed to get over the crossings. Clear skies meant good views of Meander Valley. An added highlight is the vivid colouring provided by the "turning" of the myrtle leaves. Cheers Chris.

Hi Chris, have they repaired the access road into the start of the track yet?

Hi PTCB. If you mean have they put the bridge back in , the answer is no. If you mean Smoko Road itself to the beginning of the walk ,then that is ok but a little rough and rocky in some spots. A lot of trees have fallen across or are hanging over the old access road past where the bridge was,so would need a good deal of chainsawing to clean it up . Makes a nice wide start until you get to the track proper. Cheers Chris.

Yes.....a delightful corner of the tiers...took me five goes to reach the summit.....the first three (unwisely) were by the cliffs....the last by the track. First came upon those cliffs as a forestry worker in the mid-70s, when the coupes around Smoko Creek were felled. I remember camping on the old logging stage one winter and woke to four inches of frost. But a delightful place, in almost any weather.

Went on this very pretty walk yesterday. Thanks for the warning about the road PCTB, I took my bike and thoroughly enjoyed the novel finish to the walk riding back down the road which does still have a large impassable hole in it. I must admit that I didn't ride a huge amount of the way up - riding up hill before my legs had warmed up was a bit hard! The total walk and ride took me 5 and a quarter hours. I was intending to go in to Chasm Falls as well, but my knees were playing up and I wanted to get back to the watch the Devonport Carnival so I gave it a miss. Given how pretty the walk along Smoko Creek was, I'm looking forward to going back in to Chasm Falls, maybe on a hot summer's day to enjoy the water.

I met a couple back at the car who told me the walk can be done as a round trip - a tagged track goes up on the carpark side of the river.

I also wondered about the Stumps Track, and a signpost to "The Valley" which I assume is the valley at the top of Smoko Creek that can be seen from up the top.

The plateau can also be reached from the end of Scotts Road on a well marked track in around 1hr with just a short hop across to the summit. Return trip of 2.5hrs.

Does anyone have any idea of recent track conditions (I.e. May or June) to Mother Cumming's Peak from either Smoko Creek or Scotts Road? We will be driving to the start point in a 2WD van and am aware of the Smoko Creek road washouts.

Was up there a couple of months ago, there is a hole in the road, adds about 40mins walking each way. No dramas.

Walked into Chasm Falls on Monday....that hole pictured above has turned into a complete wash out of the culvert....road blocked at junction now.
I also doubt whether the first washout will ever be repaired either....but if some gripping isn't done to the road between the washout and Mother Cummings Rivulet....all that section of road will gradually be washed out due to numerous blocked culverts and water now running the length of that section.
I'll send details to FT....maybe some work can be done when the repairs are done to the Falls road.

We tried to walk to Mother Cummings Peak on the 2nd July from Scotts Road but were hampered by two problems, firstly we could not find the track in that is marked on the 1987 version of Quamby Bluff and secondly (more seriously) was the complete clouding in of the peak. The Scotts Road Lookout had no visibility due to the fog/mist so our party decided to leave Mother Cummings in peace and return another day.
